@PjS1525 : Thank you so much for this post! One of our X council members Keith Ordeneaux is trying to sell this "meat market" as a place just like Doreck's in Santa Fe, where you can go grab a burger. BULL ****!! It will be NOTHING like that place!! This will be a Halal Slaughterhouse, for the mosque-- from what I understand it won't even be for public access.
Why does the City of Pearland NEED this???

@Stealth83 : This isn't going to be a "meat market", it's a Halal Slaughterhouse, not for the public. It's for the mosque.

@Ickyvicky : Please don't be fooled by our X City Councilman Keith Ordeneaux, this is NOTHING like Doreck's.
This is a Hala Slaughterhouse for the mosque, it will not be open to the public. It isn't a place to go grab a burger. They primarily slaughter goats and sheep, occasionally cattle. They pray over them and then slit their throat. Of coarse this is more humane than what Tyson does in their plants to chickens and turkeys, but again this will not be open to the public.
I love a good fresh meat market too but this will not benefit the majority citizens of Pearland unless you are a member of the mosque.

@EMRiley : Your welcome! Regardless of who owns it or who it's for, it would be a livestock slaughterhouse which does nots belong in a residential area or so near an elementary school, and as far as many are concerned it doesn't belong in the city limits of Pearland. And yes, I've gathered from some of the posts that some have been mislead to believe it is to be a meat market or butcher shop type place where the already dead carcasses of meat will be delivered and then be cut up, packaged, and sold in a public storefront. Others have apparently been led to believe it will be a game processing business for hunters to take the deer, hogs, etc. that they have already dispatched to be processed for personal consumption. However, if you examine the documents that accompany the application for the permit, there will be live goats, sheep, and sometimes cattle held in pens for an unspecified amount of time, then these animals will be slaughtered onsite. Thankfully, the applicant has postponed the hearing regarding his application and said he/they are not sure if they will pursue it in the future.

Someone posted on FB that owner now wants to go through with the Slaughterhouse but it does not have a date as of yet on City Counsels agenda.

Some made a comment on behalf of the owner saying it's not going to be just a Slaughterhouse like he originally applied for, he hopes to sell vegetables, cheese, and honey in the near future.

Of course they "HOPE TO SELL" vegetables, cheese and honey "IN THE FUTURE" to the community. That's their way of getting the citizens of Pearland to not oppose this Slaughterhouse.

Why don't they START with a "produce market" and prove their public business concept. Then reapply for the "Slaughterhouse" CUP # and provide the public with the business plan on how they will be following all USDA regulations TNRCC regulations and TECQ regulations.

That way the citizens no longer have the fears that this business could not only potentially turn into a future mini-Brio Site, but we also know that business will be benefitting our City and not just the Mosque.

The problem with the business plan that you just provided above is that this is just a small plot of land, 3.7 acres. How can you possibly grow vegetables, have bee hives so close to the school for honey and still have room for livestock????

Also when the business owner applied for the CUP #, he listed that this was for a slaughterhouse. He should have mentioned his intention to sell produce and honey in the future....

Is it just me, or does this sound like an after thought to try to pull one over on the good citizens of Pearland?

Let's keep our eyes open for the new date for City Council discussions. Never forget about this one.

I would respect people more if they were honest enough to admit that the only problem people have with this business that it is Muslim owned . People complained about the Masjid ( Mosque ) built on Garden Road & now this . As a long time Pearland resident I know what right wing AM radio says about Muslims is believed by alot of European Americans as Gospel truth without investigation .

The animal must be turned so the head faces Mecca, and the name of Allah must be spoken as the throat is slit and the animal is allowed to bleed out. I wonder if they will also do chickens, the slaughter houses in Saudi did. The day I was in the meat market with my girls and a family brought the family sheep(complete with bow around the neck) in and started explaining how they wanted it cut up, I took the kids and left. Yahya, do not begin to presume that everyone who does not agree with you has issues with Muslim business. I have Muslim friends, and have lived in Saudi before. I take issue with this business is not appropriate to be located near a school, and with sanitation issues. I know how "clean" and "sanitary" these places were in Saudi, and really don't want to see those same standards being followed so close to a school and water way. As for your Mosque, I really don't give a flip about it or where it is located. I have investigated more than enough to know it is something I do not want to be involved. with.

Oh, and for the record, one of our friends was a butcher, in Saudi. He took us to see the pens where the animals were kept before slaughter. I have seen that of which I speak. I am also not right wing, racist, or anti Muslim.

@Yahya : I don't think that most of us have any problem with it being Muslim owned. But a slaughterhouse near a residential area and a school IS a problem.

I have Muslims living near me. My son lived and worked in Egypt and we visited him there. We have Muslim girl scout troops here in Pearland.

I had no idea and really do not care that it is Muslim, it is to close to the school and residents. I hope this does not pass,
