I believe that public awareness is the key to all perceived problems, basically in the world, to creating acceptable changes pro and con.

Harken back most notably to the U.S. 2016 elections. For as long as I can remember {at least 50 years) I heard many people (and I was in multiple professions that involved much public involvement) say that "...what we really need is far fewer politicians and to get back to basic common sense."

So many laws enacted, so many unenforceable edicts! So MANY restrictions.

The states that you mention all seem to be very ready to "legislate" the peoples ability to control the way that people act to satisfy their own desires. I happen to believe that communication (over and over) eventually allows folks to make a decision without feeling force.

But I am in an apparent minority; it seems that most folks want to be regulated.

Absolutely! My husband was hit by someone who was texting and missed the red light. I would also like to see stiffer penalties for drunk driving - lose their license for several months for first offense, maybe a year for the second offense and then no license after that and having a gadget that makes the car not start if the driver has been drinking.

People always think that they can do it, they drive well enough, etc. reminds me of the seatbelt debate. Look how many lives have been saved

I see freedom of speech isn't what it used to be! Everyone is entitled to their opinions people. I'm not attacking anyone for theirs, I don't expect to be in return.

I don't think you were attacked. Just everyone giving their opinions. I've had people talking on the other side of how I feel and I don't feel attacked.

For it.

Some years ago I was taking my son (who was a child at the time) to Via Colori, but we never made there because we were rear-ended by a texter. She was crying, not because there was a child in my car or because there was a baby in the truck in front of us that she rammed us into, but because this was her second accident, and she was afraid of losing her school bus driving job... that's right, this bubblehead drove children to school. These are the types of people who need to be told what to do for the safety of the people around them and who need to face a consequence if they can't manage to exhibit a little common sense. I could care less if you text and kill yourself, but when you endanger me and mine, I would feel better knowing that you could get in deep doo-doo for doing so. Sure, a no cell phone law may be hard to enforce, but in the end it's worth it. I don't know why people are against it. You wouldn't be against a law that prohibited driving and TV channel surfing, what's different about texting?

I think everyone's comments have resulted in a great discussion on this issue. Now, of course there will be varied differences of opinions simply because we all have had different experiences, good and bad with people texting and driving. I will say this, texting while driving would not even be a discussion if there weren't anything negative or even horrible connected with this practice. The problem to me is that solutions to issues such as this are too often reactive instead of proactive. People at worst have died as a result of texting while driving. Recall that texting started in order to keep cell phones away from the head and face. Remember the dangerous radio waves and brain damage. The industry has simply managed to manipulate us to choose one manner of dangerous activity over another. I hate/love my cell phone. This is the very reason I keep my house phone connected. But guess what? I can't use my house phone to respond to your posts. We are all doomed by this addictive technology. Here's yet another opinion delivered via the complement of a text. Wow!

There is a growing sentiment that says that cell phone addiction is actually being deliberately programmed into our phones, btw

the event was a reminder of the binary choice facing smartphone owners, who, according to one study, consult their device 150 times a day: Leave the WMD on and deal with relentless prompts compelling them to check its screen, or else completely disconnect. “It doesn’t have to be the all-or-nothing choice,” Harris told me after taking in the arts-and-crafts scene. “That’s a design failure.”

The attention economy, which showers profits on companies that seize our focus, has kicked off what Harris calls a “race to the bottom of the brain stem.” “You could say that it’s my responsibility” to exert self-control when it comes to digital usage, he explains, “but that’s not acknowledging that there’s a thousand people on the other side of the screen whose job is to break down whatever responsibility I can maintain.” In short, we’ve lost control of our relationship with technology because technology has become better at controlling us.

Thanks so much for sharing this information. I knew I wasn't crazy. I don't have an addictive personality, but as soon as this thing bings, I run to pick it up. Again, I hate the control it has over me! I need it for the competitive nature of my profession.😳 I am going to find a way to disconnect after business hours. I mean it!!!

It is illegal up in MA where I used to live. The police just pulls you over like any other traffic stop. Hands free cellphone use is allowed. It really is the texting that is the issue.
