How many times have I nearly been in a wreck because someone texting was veering into my lane! This is just as dangerous as drunk driving.

But...... here's a problem: most of us use our phones for GPS. Picking up the phone to glance at it is not the same as texting. I guess the solution there would be to get something that mounts the phone where I can see it.

Yes! Drivers are distracted enough. It's a popular law up north, not that everyone folllows it, but when they don't they are obvious by the way they drive

Texting and driving is a big problem...

The big upshot of the technological push toward self driving cars is to prevent the ~5% of irresponsible drivers who cause the majority of accidents from texting-and-driving, or speeding, or driving drunk, etc.

It could potentially save thousands of lives a year, assuming the technology is sophisticated enough to handle most traffic situations.

Absolutely, yes. I have had too many close calls because of drivers on their phones.

I feel strongly both ways lol. It does drive me nuts when people slow their roll and then you see it's due to the cellphone. However, I don't know that taxing our local pd's with yet another thing to monitor is the answer.

In a few years I foresee the majority of vehicles equipped automatically to be hands-free. That cost for safety will be passed onto us the consumer. The majority will pay for the irresponsibility of the few which is how it works for most other safety options put in place in most other areas of our lives.

Common sense is no longer the rule.

I wouldn't support it; especially since I see more officers using their phones while driving than citizens.

Do you think it's not a real threat? Personally, I see a lot of bad behavior by people on cell phones...I have a hunch they cause more accidents than people realize.

Oh, it is certainly a threat. No doubt many accidents could have been prevented that involved cell phones. Just as many accidents could have been prevented had a driver not been impaired/under the influence... a law that passed many a decade ago but has yet to stop. Slapping a law down that will make the city more money than actually prevent people from using electronic devices behind the wheel is not the best option in my opinion.

Sometimes I wish cell phones didn't exist. It has it good things and bad. It can help us in an emergency situation but, it can also endanger us.

I agree that there are many distractions. That said: Coming from states that passed this law it has made driving much less stressful. It was the first thing I noticed when driving here. Even in New York City or MA or CT highways and roads like Broadway there aren't so many distracted drivers weaving and pulling out or turning Willy nilly. Parking lots are the worst! The fine is appropriate and should go up with each one. If you are responsible what difference would the law make? It's so easy to pull over if it is that important.
