@Lyn0811 : Why be shocked? The youth of today are using whatever is available to them, as did all previous generations. The availability now is exponentially greater than even 50 years ago and will be in 15 years hence.

@Alex : Sometimes it is to brag. Sometimes a dare or gang initiation. Not always the intention to use it. But that's how "accidents" happen.

According to the school, the student was going on a spring break trip right after school and packed the gun for the trip. Talk about poor judgement!

@PearlandDotCom : So thankful the police were in top of it. Parents need to be more vigilant.

The more troubling aspect of this situation was that the student didn't think to leave the gun off of school premises, knowing that it wasn't allowed, even if he was going use it on Spring Break. Don't know if it was for protection or what, just the fact that his brain was not rational enough to follow the rules!

@Tom57 : I went to Milby and the kids walking to Deedy would try to pick fights with the HS boys.

@Sophie1 : Yes, same at Albert Thomas and Ross Sterling. People forget how bad it was back in the 70s and 80s in Houston public schools.
Honestly, it is so much better in public schools now than it used to be. There's no comparison.
The violence at Albert Thomas Junior High is the reason my Dad retired early from Houston Fire Dept and we moved to East Texas.

@sdmanis : in my day(LOL), my brothers and sister knew there was a loaded .357 revolver in my dad’s night stand. We didn’t dare touch it. Even as a teen, I didn’t because Dad would bister my butt if I did. Some kids today either don’t respect their parents or, fear punishment for not following rules. Sign of the “everyone gets a trophy” generation.
