@MartiMo I do know a Turner, there are discussions like what you are suggesting, and some are going on this week. I do not know about the other schools.
I have not seen the source material yet, but the news have reported that social media is not helping out youth with positive mental health. The paper referenced a per review psychology journal, and that additional studies should be completed. As adults, we should be aware of this.

I'm thankful he was found. As the parent of a child who had a friend that killed herself during their senior year, I know how the sadness and anger of a suicide can affect us. Hopefully he'll get help, move on, and do something productive with his life.

@MartiMo You go Ms. Marti...I agree 💯 %! It is not only the Veterans but also our aging parents that are being bullied by the Medical system. In fact just last week they threw me out of the doctors office cause they could not answer my questions on why they want to change my mothers medicine....I was ready to spit nails...but did not want to embarrass my mother.

@MartiMo @squidgirl @DrewLundgren My heart goes out to everyone touched by this young man. Praying he gets the solution and jumps on the road to recovery.

It's terrible that we have to discuss an issue like this but reading this thread to the end I'm also refreshed that so many of you are so "in tune" with the pressures on young people today and understand that they desperately need our help as parents, friends & family.
Only when we can admit there is a problem, can we successfully find a solution.
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences & wisdom because talking about it here makes it much easier to take out into our community.

@Tom57 Sadly, I've been reading another discussion thread on FB that mostly consists of mothers of these teens. They aren't in tune with what we are saying here. They want more money poured into the schools to provide professional psychologists on a regular basis, regular training/discussion sessions on bullying/depression/stress, more adults roaming the hallways (kids shouldn't be able to be alone in the halls), and so on and so on... in other words, more coddling and micro-managing of these young adults, rather than teaching them how to become self-sufficient and independent.

I don't see eye-to-eye with my peers. I think they are ignorant or choose to be oblivious to the truth. The schools aren't failing our kids. The US Dept of Education with its "No Child Left Behind" mandated assessment testing is failing our kids. Parents coddling their children and not letting them learn how to handle what life throws at them, both good and bad, are failing our kids.

I served this country for 20 years. I love this country, but I hate what politicians are doing to it in the name of their own greed and power. And I hate that your typical American doesn't know enough about history and current events to realize that the wool has been pulled over their eyes. I've talked to taxi drivers in other countries that know more about US politics and how they impact the world than your average American does. It's a sad state of affairs. And as long as we allow ourselves to remain ignorant and believe we are powerless victims, this downhill slide will continue.

--- whoever told me earlier to stay on the soapbox...I hope you were prepared for what was behind the door you opened.

@squidgirl There are hands on parents and there are hands off parents. Those are the hands off. I find it extremely disturbing and in my mind should be considered child abuse. You aren't giving your child the basic needs that they need to succeed. You aren't giving them a morale compass to live by and as you stated the problem solving abilities are null and void.

One thing that comes to mind is when Donald Trump won the Presidency. The news agencies were panning to different college campus's at one point. Students were CRYING.........CRYING , like little babies saying, "We won't stand for this"! I remember one group crying saying, "I'm so sick at my stomach right now, I'm just sick".

The parents created that, the hands off parents. Yes, the colleges are Liberal but if those kids would have had a better foundation, a better belief system that would not have happened. We can't expect other people to give our kids what they need from us as parents. It just will not work.

This thread has turned into a "blame the government because too many of us are manipulated by government" issue. Take a step back for a minute and focus, please.

@Tom57 I'm going to politely somewhat disagree with you. Hands off parents leave a child to struggle with issues on their own; obviously not good.

The parents I refer to are the "helicopter" parents. The ones that are SO hands on that a child doesn't get to learn about actions and consequences, doesn't get to learn to handle failure, loss, embarrassment, etc because mommy or daddy will always be there to set things right.

I'm a middle ground parent. When my children have a bad grade (below a 70%) pop up, they get questioned about why they got the grade. After they explain, I usually look at them sidewise and say, "Ok. And?" That's when they tell me what they are going to do to fix it. Granted, mine are teens now. When they were younger, we would discuss ways THEY could fix it. Not how I was going to get it fixed for them. When their team lost a game, we dealt with the disappointment of loss. We talk about why song lyrics are inappropriate. I talk about my past- good and bad- so they can see ways they can handle tough situations. Am I a perfect parent? Heck no! But I feel that I've raised kids who are confident to deal with things on their own and aren't afraid to come to me when they REALLY need my help, not just because it's easier to get me to fix it for them.

@HillCountry I think you misunderstand me. I believe in accountability of the individual. But we as individuals have lost interest in politics and governance. So WE vote in people that don't have the average American's best interest at heart. This is a We the People problem, not a government problem.

You're right. We should hold up a minute and pray on what happened for a little longer. I agree with what you say, and as a parent who's been on the outside of the same situation with different results, I'm not going to do the blame game.

Being a mother of a high schooler this really breaks my heart. This young student has so much to live for. Life gets so busy but, we should take some time to hug our kids, and let them know how important they are.

@margarita So true. Let's make sure our homes are a safe haven for kids. Make sure they you ask them how their day was. I try to do this with my grands.
