POSSUM ON THE PATIO

Around 3 this morning, Chloe decided she needed to go out. I was with her, as she made her usual safety check. She stuck her nose under the grill cover, and jumped about two feet back. I was honestly afraid there could be a snake under it, and wondered how in the world I would get it to leave. She went around the side, and started back under. About that time, a baby possum came out, and it wasn't playing possum, it was ready for a fight. Thank goodness 3 years of no, leave it, training has stuck with her. She was going to grab it, but on command backed off. Took her back in the house, where she is still sleeping. I went out to check, and possum and any possible family members are no longer under the grill. I hope they have moved on to other places. I guess I know now what she has been tracking the last few days.

@Stealth83 : That's about how big it was! No, she is not a barker. Once in a while if she is tracking she will sound off, or she does have her famous, "We're all gonna die" yell. It is between a bay and a scream, will really get your attention. First time I heard that was when I first brought her home and a flock of cranes flew over.

Mine would of been barking like someone was trying to kill her.

@Stealth83 : She is. Since Daisy is gone, she sticks to my husband like glue. She is a total Velcro dog, and always wants to be touching someone.

I'm glad your dog stopped on command! Possums are good for us. They eat insects.

She really is good. DD's boyfriend was confusing Heidi the other day. If they are close enough to hand you something, "give it," is the command. If they are running like something is after them, "drop it," or "drop it NOW," is the command. If they are going after something, or thinking about it, "Leave it," They also know "no bark," and the usual sit, stay, down. If Heidi refuses to quit barking, "NO MAS" is her absolute no.

About 3 weeks ago, I noticed out of the kitchen window something flopping in the grass. Originally thought it was leaves, but it kept going so I went to see. It was a baby possum barely alive. Called Animal control, and they came and got it. A couple of days later, found another baby, brought it in over night, and called Animal Control the next day, and again they came. I asked the officer if it was old enough to make it on it's own. She said it was, and would've been fine. I asked if I could have it back, and she said she would let them know at the shelter. A couple of days later, found a third. Did not call Animal Control. Gave him some orange and apple pieces, and let him stay until dark. Took him out back and set him free. I now get a droppings on my back porch, guess he feels at home.

@TC2u : We used to have a mama come to our bird feeder to drink, with all her babies hanging on. I really hope this one relocated, I don't want to spend all my nights playing rescue.

My daughter had to take Chloe to the vet for me yesterday. She wanted it to be positive, so maybe Chloe would not throw up. She stopped at Chick Fil A and bought nuggets. She shared the whole order with Chloe, she would take a bite of one, and give her the rest. It was so positive Chloe did not throw up at all! Not sure how many nuggets I will need to get her from here to Livingston, but maybe I should start saving change now.
