Strengthening Public Safety: Pearland's Neighborhood ALPR Initiative

Loading Image...

Last year, a new initiative in public safety was set in motion as the City of Pearland announced the launch of the Neighborhood ALPR Public Safety Grant program. The goal of the program is to strengthen public safety through public/private collaborations.

Through this ground-breaking grant initiative, the Pearland Police Department is empowering communities to thrive by leveraging Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR), which will allow participating neighborhoods to take a proactive stance in enhancing security measures.

ALPRs continuously scan license plates and furnish invaluable leads for police investigations. These smart devices are programmed to alert the Pearland Police Department the moment a vehicle on the “hot list” of wanted vehicles crosses their path, ensuring quick and efficient action.

ALPRs are not limited to immediate alerts. They additionally provide essential information to the police department when inquiries arise, earning their reputation as a powerful asset in the fight against crime.

Several neighborhoods have joined the program, allocating funds to installing Automatic License Plate Readers. There are still City of Pearland grant funds available for other Pearland neighborhoods.

The grant provides reimbursement directly to the Property Owner’s Association (POA) upon purchasing ALPRs, covering up to 50% of the ALPR system costs. This includes installation, up to 12 months of annual service, and associated expenses like installation-related permits. The maximum distribution per grant is set at $20,000.
