Yesterday, the Pearland Police Department paid their respects to fallen Pearland Police Officer James Howard Cassidy Jr., who was killed in the line of duty 50 years ago. On May 16, 1973, Ofc. Cassidy was a motorcycle officer conducting a commercial vehicle escort when he was tragically struck on the Gulf Freeway. Officer Cassidy began his career with Pearland after serving 5 years with Lufkin PD and served five years with the Pearland Police Department prior to his death. Before beginning his law enforcement career, Officer Cassidy served in Vietnam with the Air Force. Officer Cassidy was survived by his wife Kay, and two young sons.

Condolences and tributes poured in, in the days and weeks following Officer Cassidy’s death. Pearland Mayor Carlton McComb issued the following proclamation: "I, Carlton McComb, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Pearland, Texas, do hereby proclaim the week of June 10th, 1973 through June 16th, 1973, as James Howard Cassidy Jr. Week in Pearland and give their prayers and recognition to the outstanding deeds of this fine officer and that through men like him our city and this world, will become a better place to live."

They made a special trip to Guadalupe County to meet with Officer Cassidy’s widow, Ms. Kay, and hand delivered this beautiful bouquet. Ms. Kay was moved with emotion that they remembered the 50th year anniversary of her late husband’s passing. Ms. Kay will always remain a part of their PD family and holds a special place in their hearts.

A tribute to Officer Cassidy and all Pearland Officers killed in the line of duty can be viewed at the Pearland Police Officer's Memorial located at the JC Doyle Public Safety Building, 2555 Cullen Blvd. in Pearland, Texas. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
