Will your child be attending Kindergarten in the fall? Are you interested in your child learning Spanish as a second language? Would you like more information on the Dual Language program model & what to expect during the screening process? Learn more below.

The Bilingual/ESL Program provides resources to help students whose native language is not English succeed in the classroom. It also offers a Dual Language Program, allowing native English and Spanish speakers to learn both languages side by side. The goal of the district's bilingual programs is to ensure students' lifelong success.

Bilingual Education

Pearland ISD bilingual education is a Dual Language 2-way and/or 1-way offered in select elementary and middle schools (PK-6) for students whose native language is Spanish and who need to enhance their English language skills.

The program provides Emergent Bilingual (EB) students with structured skills development in English and native language support from bilingual-certified teachers.

The Dual Language Bilingual Education program is offered at six campuses:

*Carleston Elementary
*Cockrell Elementary
*Lawhon Elementary
*Magnolia Elementary
*Jamison Middle School
*Sablatura Middle School

*Students who are currently in the Dual Language program at Pearland Junior High South and Pearland Junior High West will be allowed to complete the Dual Language program in 8th grade during the 2022-2023 school year.

English as a Second Language

Pearland ISD serves elementary and secondary language-minority students who speak other languages (excluding Spanish at the elementary level) through an English as a Second Language program with ESL-certified teachers and/or those with training in ESL methodology.

Because of increasing enrollment of Vietnamese-speaking students, Pearland ISD has submitted exceptions with TEA for a bilingual Vietnamese program and is actively recruiting bilingual Vietnamese-certified teachers.

In grades PK-12, the district provides ESL programs for all students whose native language is not English or Spanish. Students who are identified as Emergent Bilingual (EB) are provided with English language support.

Instructional programs encompass several models, including:

*Self-contained classes with ESL-certified teachers

*Pull-out and push-in instruction

*Tutoring

*Content area instruction with Sheltered Instruction (SIOP) trained teachers

Flexibility in program models ensures that EB students have the best language support until they become proficient in English and can be mainstreamed into general education classes.

Throughout the school year, students are evaluated in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Every spring, all active K-12 grade EB students are assessed through the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System.

I would sign my child up for this in a second. Studies show it's much harder to learn a second language after puberty (seriously) and anyone who spoke two languages as a child picks up the second one again, even if they've forgotten it later. I watched my own family do this, most successfully where one parent spoke one language and the other spoke the 'second' one. It was funny watching the 'English' parent ask a question in French, and watch the little kid process, and answer back in English, but they grew up effortlessly bilingual.

I would definitely do this if I had kids in school. But it would not be available to my family even if they were still young. My kids went to Shadycrest Elementary and for some reason this is not offered to all of Pearland elementary schools.

What a wonderful opportunity for a child to learn a second language. When we lived in VA the kindergartens offered English and Spanish, French, or Japanese.
