Piper the Cat rescue
These rescues are not always easy. They require patience, a solid understanding of cat behavior, teamwork, public cooperation and a ton of luck. Happy Piper is safe.
Pearland Animal Services recently responded to a call of a kitten trapped in a storm drain in the drive thru of Chick-fil-A, located at 1512 Broadway. Chick-fil-A employees stated they could see and hear the kitten, although the kitten was scared and beyond their reach. This prompted a rescue response from Pearland Animal Services and Pearland Fire Department, who set out a cage to enclose the kitten, so it could be brought safely out of the storm drain. After the cage was put in place, the kitten was scared and not quite heavy enough to activate the cage enclosure device. After some thought, Pearland Animal Services Manager John Fischer had the idea to pull up a YouTube video of a mother cat calling her kittens and the kitten immediately responded to the sound of the mother cat. Manager Fischer crawled down into the storm drain with the assistance of Pearland Fire Department, and brought the kitten safely out of the storm drain. The female kitten was found to be completely healthy and taken to the Pearland Animal Shelter, where she was given the name Piper. Piper took the long way to the shelter, but will be available soon for adoption. Come down and visit Piper and her friends at Pearland Animal Services, located at 2002 Old Alvin Road, or call (281) 652-1970 for more information.
