Tragic Death Precinct 7 Deputy Jennifer ChavisThe Pearland Police Department is saddened to learn of the death of Precinct 7 Deputy Jennifer Chavis, who was struck by a drunk driver on Saturday, April 2, 2022, while waiting on the side of the road to intercept the same driver. PPD mourn the death of a HERO and ask that you join them in keeping her family, friends and coworkers in your thoughts and prayers.Houston - Harris County Precinct 7 Constable May Walker, deputies, and staff members are devastated by the loss of Precinct 7 Deputy Jennifer Chavis. Deputy Jennifer Chavis was tragically killed on Saturday, April 2, 2022, while on duty. Deputy Jennifer Chavis, born May 4, 1989, joined the Precinct 7 department on November 20, 2020. She was assigned to work with the Precinct 7 Toll Road Division. Chavis, also an Army veteran, is survived by her husband, a 4-year-old son, and an 11-year-old nephew that she and her husband were raising.Narrative:The suspect, Adolfo Serrano, driving a white utility truck, was traveling west in the outside lane of traffic in the 7200 block of South Sam Houston Tollway West. He was observed by witnesses weaving and swerving in the lanes while driving. A witness called the Police to report a suspected drunk driver. Deputy Jennifer Chavis was dispatched to respond to the call and stopped in the traffic ahead of Mr. Serrano on the entrance ramp to the westbound lanes. Serrano failing to drive in a single lane struck Deputy Chavis’ patrol vehicle causing a major crash. The truck continued striking the outside barrier of the tollway, while Deputy Chavis rotated counterclockwise coming to rest in the number 4 lane of the tollway. Chavis’ marked patrol unit became engulfed in flames immediately after the crash. Deputy Chavis was found with no signs of life on the scene due to injuries she sustained during the crash. The suspect driver, Adolfo Serrano, was transported by EMS to Ben Taub Hospital where he exhibited signs of impairment. The Harris County District Attorney's Office team accepted charges of Intoxication Manslaughter of a Peace Officer (Deputy Jennifer Chavis). There were no other vehicles involved in this crash.Harris County Constable Precinct 7 will continue to conduct the administrative portion of the investigation.
