Pearland Police Dept. was recognized by
Brazoria County NAACP President Eugene Howard
On Monday, October 12th, 2020 the Pearland Police Department was recognized by
Brazoria County NAACP President Eugene Howard at a press conference held in front of the police station. Mr. Howard applauded Pearland PD’s progressive policing practices, training, and policies, many of which are in line with initiatives being proposed by the NAACP in their "Texas NAACP Change the World-Texas Restorative Criminal Justice Plan in the Aftermath of George Floyd". The press conference was attended by members of the NAACP, Pearland Police officials, members of Mr. George Floyd’s family, and dignitaries.
During the press conference, Chief of Police Johnny Spires stated, "Sir Robert Peel said almost 200 years ago that “the police are the public and the public are the police.” The people grant us the power and authority to protect them from crime and disorder. Which means that power and authority can also be taken away. The foundation of law enforcement is public trust. Trust is built through transparency, communication, and empathy. This is a time we should not shy away from tough conversations about our profession and our relationship with people we protect and serve. We are here today because we have been able to have many conversations and build a relationship with Mr. Eugene Howard and the
Brazoria County NAACP. Through hours of meetings, phones calls and texts we were able to find common ground on things we believe are necessary to maintain the public trust here in Pearland. One message I think has been lost the last few months in our country is what will we leave our children? Our children must live in the world we create. We need to project and live the message of unity. I look forward to building upon this foundation and appreciate the acknowledgement here today.”
