The first week in May is when we recognize all of the hardworking men and women of our local correctional facilities.

This year from May 6th through 12th, the Pearland Police Department will be taking time to applaud the hard work and dedication of those who work in the Pearland City Jail and other various correctional facilities.

The Pearland City Jail staffs twelve jailers and one jail supervisor. Their day to day duties are to provide a secure and humane facility for inmates. The Jailers are an integral part of the Pearland Police Department and play an important role in the criminal justice system. National Correctional Officers Week is the perfect time to recognize the hard and often dangerous work.

The nationwide tradition of recognizing corrections officers began May 5, 1984, when President Ronald Reagan delivered a proclamation designating the first week of May as National Correctional Officers Week. In 1996, the name of the week was modified by Congress to become National Correctional Officers and Employees Week to include other vital members of correctional system. On behalf of the Chief of Police, J.L. Spires and the Pearland Police Department please join us in thanking these public servants for their job well done.

"While the officer on the street is the most visible, we can't overlook the important work the Pearland Police Department's Jail Staff performs day in and day out. They have a tough job and definitely deserve to be recognized for what they do," - Pearland Police Chief J.L. Spires.

I had no idea that correctional staff were recognized nationally! For those who do it my hat is off to you as I worked "inside" for three years and I know the ups and downs of the job. Keep up the good work and be safe.
