Pearland Library Awarded Enhancement Grant
The Pearland Library has been chosen as a 2017 Texas Book Festival Collection Enhancement Grant recipient to enhance its collection and to encourage reading in the community. The grant was specifically used to add adult fiction and nonfiction books in Arabic, Chinese and Vietnamese, which are three of the most spoken languages in Pearland beyond Spanish and English, but are underrepresented in the library’s collection. The grant establishes a starter collection in each language, with books in diverse subjects and genres. In addition, their usage data will help guide future purchases.
Pearland is increasingly diverse, with twenty-six percent of the
population speaking a language other than English at home. The library obtained the grant to provide resources for the many speakers of languages other than English and Spanish in the Pearland area, who are looking for support and services in close proximity to their homes, without having to navigate to Houston.
Many of the books have arrived, and they are being shelved in the new book area at the front of the library. Suggestions for future purchases are appreciated.
The Pearland Library is located at 3522 Liberty Dr. For more information, contact the Pearland Library at 281-652-1677.
