Stolen Gas

I inherited a brand new boat at the end of last year. I put in gas additive since we were headed into winter, and brought it home over the weekend to change the gas since the gas is 8 months old, and boat motors are so sensitive. It had a full tank, 27 gallons, but I did take it out once last year. So probably spent 3-4 gallons. When I went to get it out of storage (Pearland Sites Rd), it was laying the on neck. At first I thought the stand collapsed, or maybe I forgot to make sure it was locked in place. I jacked it up with a car jack, and got the stand up, and locked. There was nothing wrong with it, so brought it home. After draining 5-6 gallons, there was no more. I finally figured out, someone collapsed the stand on purpose to pull the gas forward, and they drained it. If you have a boat in storage... It would take about $100 to replace the $60 of gas I had in it. On the other I was going to have to hand pump it 3-4 hours to get the gas out. Instead I spent about 30 minutes, So there was a good side to my theft of gas.

I hope the storage people who you paid, to take care of your boat, have been notified of your small claims filing. I abhor this current culture of suing everyone for anything, but this is a legit claim.

I'm afraid we will be seeing much more of this. Lots of folks are putting locking gas caps on their RVs, boats and vehicles.

As much of a deterrent that you think this would be, many folks/thieves are desperate for gas and will do anything to get it. I have already heard of cases in Houston area where the bottom of gas tanks have been "ice picked" and had a hole knocked in them to drain the gas out.
So, locking gas cap is kind of a 50/50 chance thing.
Locking gas cap possibly could cost a person more than gas replacement. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Unless they have changed greatly, it isn't that difficult to remove a locking gas cap. Locks are for honest people.

@Blackbird : I'm just moving on. The work I'd put in to recoup isn't worth it. I put the street name there in case anyone else is using the same place.

@TC2u : what kind of motor does it have. Outboard or inboard car engine. Because the gas should have been fine as long as you don't need the 50:1 oil in it

@Michael1960 : It's an outboard motor, and you're probably right. The gas looked okay. Boat motors are expensive to repair so I just rather err on the side of caution.

Were there any security cameras that could've recorded the thieves?
Did you file a police report?
I'm sorry about the loss- it's stressfull.

@TC2u : does take the oil in the gas. If it did I would wash the tank out. But I do know for a fact, if you turn the gas off and let the motor run until it stops is always best to do. Have you ever owned a boat before? Because now if you haven't, you have to take a dang class before you can even register the boat.
