NEW RANGE Well, I think I jinxed myself the other day. We were talking about stoves, and low and behold, mine died yesterday. Perfect time, just when I didn't want to spend any money. Since most people living here have a thing about eating, we went to get a new one.

I ended up with a KitchenAid. I have never had a problem with any of their products, and hope this one will be the same. DH thought we should get one you had to program through Alexa. You can't even set the time on it without "her." Since Alexa and I do not always play well together, I didn't think so. Visions of me at 5am screaming at her to "turn on the d***n stove" flashed through my head, nope.

I can't say the experience was painless. What they had in stock vs what I really wanted. I hope this one lasts many years, because if prices get much higher I can see a hot plate and toaster oven as my next appliances.

Its getting harder to find basic appliances anymore. One of my biggest regrets in recent appliance purchases is being talked into / sold a top of the line high efficiency top loading washing machine without an agitator. What a piece of crap. It hardly uses any water and hardly cleans your clothes. I miss my old, basic, pull knob, 20 year old Kenmore washing machine that we had that was still working fine because my wife got the itch to upgrade to new appliances. She even agrees and regrets the purchase. The high efficiency gas dryer barely gets your clothes dry. We have to run it 2 cycles. The washing machine has to be run in high water mode and extra heavy duty wash to get our clothes somewhat clean defeating the high efficiency. Our old eclectic dryer was so much better. It only had 2 setting. Normal and High.

@MalluGuy : I have thought about going to a used appliance store and buying an old, used top loader. No, the new washers do not clean as well, even if they take twice as long to do a load. I am on my second set of front loaders, because when we moved, the movers did not know you have to lock down the tub or it breaks it. Don't ask me how, just trust me on this. Those big, weird looking screw/clamp things that came with the washer? You have to put them back in before moving.

@susieq : I can't wait for these new ones to die, it came with a 10 year Maytag warranty so it may be a while. As soon as they do though I am purchasing a speed queen washer and dryer. I was researching them before purchasing these new stupid high efficiency Maytag's but my wife wanted something that looked "Up to date" compared to the old washer and dryer we had.

@susieq : I would have no issue at all purchasing an older used top loading washing machine and dryer. The older machines were built to last with quality parts that are readily available and are mostly mechanical with very little electronics that can go bad. Most of the places that sell used appliances do a very good job refurbishing them. I purchased a used set for a rental and they are still working very well over 10 years later.

I have a new, top of the line washing machine, too. It does a fine job, but has no low water setting at all. So now, I wait until clothes pile up a bit to do a load. It has some stupid locking mechanism, which makes it hard to soak something in Rit dye or bleach. It keeps draining the water out if I don't keep an eye on the cycle. Give me my old, spindle one, that would rip your arm off if you were stupid about it.

@Stealth83 : Those machines are the best. We have my mother in law washer and dryer in the garage apartment. They are about 40 y/o and they work so good. In the house we have the new ones. They even sing when clothes are done and I don't like them. I want to get the old fashion ones one of this days!!

@MalluGuy : Speed Queen isn't getting rave reviews like it used to. I have debated on that, but, I too have a Maytag, with a long warranty.

I think all the new models were designed to drive us crazy when we try to wash clothes
or cook on the stove.... or even the dryers are stubborn ... maybe these new models
were designed by people out there that are not republicans ???? You Think ????

@Stealth83 : Seriously, check for a good used ones. The new ones that look like the old ones, aren't. They are low water use, and the ones you can remove your agitator from? They get horrible reviews about catching your clothes under it and destroying them.

My washer and dryer is a Kenmore which I have had for ten years. I like the washer and it has no agitator in it. Does a excellent job. I can even put in my king size comforter to get it washed. Now my dryer on the other hand is just okay. There are plenty of times I have to dry twice. Definitely not happy about that. But I have been living with it.

@Megyn1 : But isn't "living with it," a sad way to be? Laundry is not exactly a fun chore, and I, for one, would like to have equipment to make it at least easier for me. I can wash a king size load in mine. It may take 3 cycles to dry, but it will be, semi clean.

I mean, really, how long has it been since you saw a commercial with someone happy and singing about doing laundry? Is this all there is now?

@susieq : I shouldn't of said living with the dryer. It's not really as bad as all that. I think I exaggerated some.
