Pearland Plans $170 Million in Parks and Facilities Projects
Pearland city leaders got a look at the city's long list of building and park projects during a special City Council meeting on Oct. 26. The city is working on 161 projects right now, and 24 of them involve parks or city buildings. About one third of all projects are still in the design or study stage. Another 20% are being bid out or built, and 14% are in negotiations. The remaining 34% don't have funding yet and are planned for the future.
Over the next five years, from 2027 to 2031, the city plans to spend about $108.5 million on buildings and other facilities. One project almost finished is a new water operations building on Alice Street. It costs nearly $5 million and should be done by December. Other projects that still need money include Fire Station No. 7 on Bailey Road, a training center for police and firefighters, and a new lighting and speaker system for the West Pearland Library. The city's facilities team also takes care of 58 city buildings and handles about 1,400 work orders each year.
Parks are getting attention too, with about $62.3 million set aside over the same five years. A big project is extending the Clear Creek Trail to the University of Houston Clear Lake Pearland campus, and work could start in May 2027. The city's new parks master plan is about 90% done and has found nine possible spots for new parks. However, all nine are east of Hwy. 288 because the city doesn't own land on the west side. Council member Rushi Patel said the city should look at buying private land so west-side residents have parks nearby too. The council will hear about water and wastewater projects at its Dec. 12 meeting.
