Pearland Mayor Calls for Transparency After Changes to Office in New Video

Pearland Mayor Quentin Wiltz put the city council back on blast in a new Facebook Reel. Wiltz says the rules for his office changed soon after he took over, and residents were never asked about it. Wiltz won a close race on May 2, 2026, beating council member Tony Carbone by about 260 votes (51% to 49%). He took office on May 11 and became Pearland's first Black mayor. It took him years to get there. He lost to longtime Mayor Tom Reid in 2017 and he lost again in 2020. In a new video, Wiltz says, "On May 11th, the mayor changed, and within 91 days, so did the rules." He says he now works under different rules than the mayors before him, and residents were not "asked or shown in advance."

This is not the first conflict Wiltz has faced. During his 2017 campaign, a local man who backed Mayor Reid said he spoke for a Brazoria County NAACP chapter. That chapter had been inactive for more than eight years. Wiltz said he had never heard of the chapter, and the Texas NAACP later said it does not endorse candidates. Since Wiltz took office, news outlets have reported growing tension between him and the city council. At a June 22 meeting, council member Rushi Patel questioned whether Wiltz was ready to lead, saying, "Don't think just because you have a title of a mayor you're a proven leader." The council then pushed a vote on regional board appointments to October.

In his video, Wiltz told residents who feel "disappointed or frustrated or even deceived" that he understands. "It's really about transparency. It's about accountability," he said, adding that residents have a "right to understand how your city government works." He has not yet said exactly what the changes were. He promised to explain in future videos what the rules said before August 10, what they say now, and how the changes affect his work. The city council's side of the story was not included in the video.

He's not wrong. It's the same thing they did in Wisconsin when a Democratic governor won. The legislature changed the rules so he had much less latitude to govern, then they point to him not getting his promised agenda in place. It's politics for politics sake, but it makes sure the community doesn't get the changes they voted for and no one wins. We need to know which council members are standing in the way of change and support viable candidates to run against them next time. And before I'm called into action, I'm not running. I would just go off on them for being a bunch of poor sports. Not a great political move, but I will say it so Mayor Wiltz doesn't have to.
