Pearland City Council Reviews Proposed Budget with Lower Property Tax Rate
The city of Pearland presented a proposed budget for fiscal year 2026-27 to the City Council during an August 10 workshop. Officials project a lower property tax rate of $0.627892 for every $100 of a home's taxable value. That rate breaks down into $0.351681 for daily operations and $0.276211 for debt payments that mainly fund major building projects. For a typical home valued at $361,225, the yearly tax bill would come to about $2,200. Overall, property taxes are expected to bring in nearly $40 million.
Under the plan, the city expects about $137.8 million in total revenue and $138.6 million in spending. Compared with the current year, revenue would rise by roughly 1.4 percent while expenses would grow by about 2.8 percent. A one-time transfer of $800,000 from the city's savings would help pay for new vehicles and equipment. Property tax collections are projected to climb nearly 4.2 percent and sales tax revenue nearly 4.5 percent. About 82 percent of the money would come from sales taxes, property taxes, and fees for city services.
Employee salaries and benefits make up roughly 70 percent of the operating budget, or about $97 million. City Council members plan to hold another budget workshop on August 24. They are scheduled to vote on the final budget and the new property tax rate in September.
