Freshmen in Pearland Will Need Extra Step to GraduateStarting this fall, incoming freshmen at Pearland ISD will face a new graduation requirement. The school board approved the change on July 14 in a 5-1 vote. Students in the class of 2030 and beyond must complete at least one Texas Education Agency (TEA) College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) indicator before they can graduate. Current high school students will follow the old rules.There are several ways to meet the requirement:
- Students can pass an Advanced Placement (AP) exam
- Earn at least three hours of dual credit
- Get an industry-based certification
- Complete an associate degree
- Enlist in the military
Those with special circumstances, like students who transfer in late, can ask for an exemption. A committee will review each request case by case.Superintendent Larry Berger said the new rule will help keep students on track earlier and prepare the district for stricter state accountability standards. One trustee voted against it, arguing it adds another obstacle for students who have already met all other graduation requirements. The district also plans to roll out a new tracking program called Career Craft to help students, parents, and counselors monitor CCMR progress.
