Angleton Man Arrested After Deadly Crash
A passenger was killed early Saturday morning when a car crashed into a concrete barrier, and the driver now faces a serious criminal charge. Police say Jesus Ortiz, 27, of Angleton, was driving a two door car south near Gifford and Phillips roads around 2:35 a.m. when the crash happened. His passenger, a Hispanic man from Angleton in his late 20s, died at the scene, according to Sgt. Arthur Davidson of the Angleton Police Department. Police have not released the passenger's name.
When officers arrived, they found the car badly damaged and Ortiz awake and responsive. Investigators decided Ortiz had been intoxicated at the time of the crash and arrested him for intoxication manslaughter. In Texas, this is a second degree felony. If convicted, Ortiz could face two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
Police have not said what caused the car to hit the barrier. They also have not explained what evidence showed that Ortiz was intoxicated. On Saturday afternoon, Ortiz was still being held in the Angleton City Jail while he waited to be moved to the
Brazoria County jail.
