@NannyB : I haven't put out a feeder yet. Here is advice from the experts.
It's hummingbird season! Time to put out your feeders! 🌺
If you feed hummingbirds, here are a few tips:
1. Don't use red dye or store-bought nectar. Any additives may have ill effects on the birds.
2. Mix 1 part granulated sugar with 3 or 4 parts hot water, and stir until completely dissolved. We're looking for clear liquid, not cloudy!
3. Keep the feeders clean. Wash them out at least once or twice a week, using dish soap (or other cleaners) and a brush. Make extra sure to rinse really well so the hummers aren't drinking soap water.
4. Hang them far apart and around corners. Territorial hummingbirds will hog as many as they can, so it helps to have them out of sight of one another. 🐦

@NannyB : I make my own. Toast gave all the info needed. The little hummers are around. Also check feeded to be sure ants have not found the feeder. Some feeders have a little water trough on the top to stop them from getting to nectar holes

@NannyB :
I have made my own in the past but my son gave me a feeder and a bottle of feed as a gift so I have been using that. They both seem to work the same.

I make my own. 1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup bottled water. Heat till sugar is dissolved and keep in fridge. It needs to come to room temp before you put it out, and try not to put it in direct sun. It will get too hot, and even spoil. I change daily. Do not add red food color or honey to the water, just sugar and water.

@NannyB: I make my own. I have one of the feeders with the water trough on top and the ants still got to it so I had to dump it and start over. That was a 1st for me. I can hear the hummingbirds but I haven't seen them yet. I think they favor my neighbors feeder because its higher than mine. I need to get a taller hook.

out of this hot sun....

@NJ99221 : Yes, because the water can get too hot for them to drink and it will also spoil faster.

You got plenty of answers here, but let me just say, the cheap mixes you get will kill the birds. Not harm them, or make them sick for a day, but kill them. The red food dye coats their tongues and messes with their digestion. That's why the feeders are colored red, so the sugar water doesn't have to be.
Way back, there was a store in malls nation wide, Nature Company I think, anyways they sold the powder (which was just sugar, preservatives and red food dye). I tried my best to get them to quit selling that stuff.
