The City of Pearland received Platinum Certification from Scenic Texas, the organization that administers Scenic City Certification Program, on Wednesday, October 6, at the annual Texas Municipal League Conference. The Scenic City Certification Program recognizes municipalities that implement high quality standards to promote scenic roadways and public spaces.
“Pearland aligns with all 10 visual environment tenets of the Scenic City Program including tree protection, parks and green space for residents, parking lot beautification that can also provide stormwater retention, sign control, dumpster screening, and protecting landscaping during development,” said Sarah Tober, President of Scenic Texas. “Throughout the year, Pearland also hosts multiple waste cleanup efforts. The community pride in these scenic standards distinguishes Pearland and we are proud to see this city achieve Platinum level Scenic City Certification."
The certification program provides a third-party point-based evaluation of adopted standards on landscaping, tree planting, and sign regulations. There are four levels of certification; Recognized, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. This year there were 22 cities that participated in the certification program. Pearland was the only city to rank up from Gold to Platinum. Out of 338 possible points available to earn, Pearland gained 322 surpassing the 90 percent threshold for Platinum certification. Pearland now joins 23 other cities in Texas to gain Platinum distinction out of 85 participating cities.
“This award takes the dedication of all staff working as a team to achieve," said Mayor Kevin Cole. "It’s not just the office staff working with ordinances but the workers ensuring that Pearland is maintained as a place to be proud of everyday that helps keep us as a community of choice.”
Any Texas city may apply to the Scenic City Certification Program for an objective review of existing municipal infrastructure ordinances as they relate to public roadways and public spaces. The evaluation compares these standards to the Scenic City model devised by Scenic Texas and the 18 partner organizations.
