Local family reunites with their dog from Pearland Pets - Animal Services

Does microchipping work? Why microchip your pet? (Besides it’s the law in Pearland).

This is little guy is Valeto. He went missing 5 years ago. Valeto was found as a stray a couple days ago and when scanned for a microchip his original owners were contacted. Valeto and his family were very happy to be reunited!

Microchipping works.

Pearland Law Sec. 6-3. - Microchipping required.
(a)The owner or caretaker of any equine, ferret, dog or cat must have the animal implanted with a registered microchip before the animal attains four (4) months of age.

Pearland Pets scans if an animal is found as a stray or any other situation where they come into contact with the pet. Owners are not required to chip before release but a citation may be issued if the pet does not get chipped in a reasonable amount of time. It’s a fairly new law so they want to make sure folks have time to be educated.

@PearlandDotCom : I didn't know that Pearland requires microchips, Good to know!
I believe in microchips, inserted them myself back in the early 90s, when microchips
made their way into the canine world, coming from the common use in the mammals, horses, cattle and zoo animals that traveled the globe.

Oh wow I did not know PEARLAND requires it either. As a suggestion, there should be more publicity about the requirement.

I never knew it was a law in Pearland. I moved here 9 years ago and my vet never said a word. She is now 12 years old. Don't know if I should bother

@Txtoast : Wow-very interesting about the horses and such. I never thought about that at all. It's better than a branding.

@Megyn1 : Only if you would be interested in recovering them if they become separated from you, it can happen.

In the past, I have found a couple of dogs that were not chipped. I tried to find families, but no one claimed them. One of them had to have emergency medical care, it was going to be expensive, so she became my dog since the local animal control could/would not cover it. Another one had been roaming a neighborhood for several months, could not even tell what he was, a friend drove 80 miles for me to "keep him while she found him a new home." Famous last words. I had him groomed, and surprise, he was an apricot Poodle. We "kept" him for her till he died from cancer two years later. I would have been more than happy to have been able to return either one of these dogs. A chip could have made that happen. My husband would have been happy for me to return them. It might have kept me from being "Client of the Year" at my vets office, but I would have loved to have a loving owner take them back.
