Pearland Pets - Animal Services hopes all of you can forgive a late post on their part. Conner’s story with them started off in a sad way. He had been left in their parking lot alone, in a dog kennel. Things did not look up for Conner as his medical exam showed a host of health issues, he had been dealing with it would appear for quite some time. They are happy to report that Yorkie Rescue of Houston came to this poor boy’s rescue and he is safe in their organization getting all of the care and love he deserves. They cannot thank you enough for rescuing!

I have had 4 Yorkies, and all were rescues. The do have a lot of health issues, most caused by bad breeding. I really miss having one in the house, but no more. I have a house full now.

I pray Connor gets excellent medical treatment and love. I have a yorkie that I love dearly. It's devastating hearing he has a host of medical issues.

@Knk : Dental issues happen with most of them. If you don't plan to keep their teeth super clean, my vet told me to always get a poodle cut on their face. All the hair around the face traps food and bacteria, causing "Yorkie mouth." Dental issues can cause heart disease. Bad quality food and too many treats can cause weight issues, and kidney failure. Too much fat can cause pancreatitis. Their ACL is not much larger than a human hair, so weight is an issue with this. The fact that they jump like fleas does not help. Yes, by having rescues, I learned a LOT about what people do wrong with these wonderful little dogs. Sometimes, I have thought how much I would like to have a good quality puppy from day one. I know the issues, and would love a chance to have a healthy one. Since I have had 4, I don't see that happening. My vet tells me that is my place in life, to care for the broken ones and show them love.

@susieq : Thanks for the great tips! Unfortunately it's too late because he doesn't have many teeth left. The vet had to pull them. 😥 he is on an excellent diet. He's on a better diet than us. Lol. Thanks for sharing the love for Yorkshire terriers.

They are such great little dogs. They were bred to be working dogs, starting when Scottish men started working in the mines in England. The original size was a little larger, there is West Highland Terrier in their back ground. Of course everyone thinks smaller is cuter, and the breed has decreased in size through the years. I have a friend who grew up in a home that raised Yorkies. Her mom's belief was, "small head, small brain capacity." The smaller they are, the more issues with head/brain issues, and not quite as smart. Her opinion, on the brain power at least. Let's be honest, a 12 ounce Yorkie is not really a dog, this is not normal. There was a time when the smallest of the litter was called a "runt," not a teacup and higher priced than a normal size.

@honeask : I lost my last Yorkie to cancer April 9, 1999. My brother was dying, so I gained his Beagle, to go with the Lab and Pit already at our house. I lost one Yorkie at 12 to kidney failure, one at 14 to heart disease(puppy mill dog} and one at 18 to being old, blind, severely arthritic, and pancreatitis. Puppy was my last one, and he was also 14. We discovered advanced cancer in November, and when he let me know it was time, I took him to the vet. He was bleeding internally, and in pain for the first time since his diagnosis. The door to the ark is closed, my animals are now 10, Abby the cat, 8 Daisy the Lab and Amy the cat, 5, Heidi the Pit, 6 Gwen the cat, and 3, Chloe the Beagle. Considering our age, it wouldn't be fair or really a good idea to bring any more in. I have thought about fostering some bottle baby kittens, but no time for that now.
