Planning a family vacation, including pets, is a lot easier today than it was a few years ago. Information on places to stay and play near Houston that are pet friendly, well located, and affordable are readily available online. However, being an ideal pet destination also means pet-friendly amenities, such as pet-friendly hotels, doggie parks, public parks, shopping and restaurants.

That's why Pearland's small-town atmosphere and pet-friendly attitude, less than 20 miles from downtown Houston, make it a great choice when staying several days or overnight.

I literally busted out laughing when I read "Pearland's small town atmosphere"!!! Pearland is anything BUT that!!
The City has torn down almost all of the small town charm, trying to make it bigger and better. Many people have said and been using the coined the phrase "mini-Houston".
I moved to Pearland in 1980. Went to kindergarten in the original CJ Harris and then finished elementary school at Shadycrest as an ARMIDILLO, not an Owl!! 518 was a blacktop road, 2 lanes, one lane for each direction. My school supplies came from TG&Y. I graduated from PHS. My boys went to Shadycrest, sat on the same exact cafeteria lunch tables that I did!! My oldest son even had 3 of my Elementary school teachers!! My two boys and I have the same Letterman jacket, we lettered in different things but they have the same look.
THAT IS SMALL TOWN!!!
Now... Pearland clear cuts everything. They plant new trees where they "think" they belong. The HOA in my gated neighborhood mandates we have FOUR TREES in our front yard. We have 2 live oaks and 2 water oaks.... hello future foundation problems right? The first thing we did when we moved in was have a root barrier put in around our home to "hopefully" help prevent future problems.
Where are all the PEAR TREES that Pearland is historically know for?
Why are homeowners that use to NEVER flood all the sudden having flooding problems?
Why did the City just ask tax payers to vote on Proposition A-D, with each one of those containing something to do with REDOING a portion of the drainage system all over Pearland so that everyone felt that needed to vote yes on each one if they lived in that area?
Why if an abundance of citizens in Pearland reach out to Council numerous times stating they do NOT want another gas station in the middle of their neighborhood area do other individuals or that same individual get to try to sneak it pass us again 6 months later?
There is NO small town feel. We sit in bumper to bumper traffic. With lots of concrete EVERYWHERE!! Our retention ponds, are neighborhood lakes- they look pretty. Our "small town" has 3 Walmart's!! 2 Hobby Lobby's and 2 Acedemy's!!!
Who are you kidding???
I promise it isn't the people that live here.

Maybe we should look into a root barrier, ours is 2 live oaks. I was looking at an old live oak yesterday, and wondering what would happen in our yard in a few years.

@MRiley : A lot of your points are fair critiques. Things have changed a lot since the '80s.

@PearlandDotCom : Absolutely things have changed and that is exactly the point. It no longer fits in the "small town" category.

@MRiley : Sure thing, I understand your opinion ( to clarify, the original article was written by the Visitor's Bureau and not me ).

@susieq : We thought it was worth it. It came with a 20 year transferable warranty. Maybe worth some brownie points if you wish to sell later.
