Proposed slaughterhouse close to school in Pearland. What do you think?

A few local citizens have been reaching out to the public and media about their concerns with a potential slaughterhouse being built in Pearland.

"ATTENTION PEARLAND RESIDENTS!...A public hearing will be held Nov 19 at 6:30 pm regarding the application for permit to construct and operate an ANIMAL SLAUGHTER HOUSE at 1526 Garden Rd. This address is inside Pearland city limits, not Brookside Village. I don't know if they have a voice in City of Pearland Planning & Zoning, but all of the Brookside residents I have talked with don't want it in or near their community either. In addition, this animal slaughter house, if approved, will be operating less than 750 feet from Lawhon Elementary School, a campus full of small children. I urge you to go to www.pearlandtx.gov/public-hearings and sign up to speak out against approval of this permit at the public hearing on Nov 19 in Council Chamber at City Hall, 3519 Liberty Dr, at 6:30 pm. If you cannot go in person to speak, you may submit a public comment form at the same web address given above. Public comment forms must be submitted by 12:00 pm on the date of the hearing. I also urge you contact your Pearland City Council representatives to express your opposition to the construction and operation of an animal slaughter house in our city. In all communications please reference the permit application number of CUP18-00022."

How long has the slaughterhouse been in the works? Who was first? I know ISD's just take property sometimes. Will it really matter?

@Islifefair : from the article, it sounds like the slaughterhouse just put in an application for a permit to get things going so would be completely new.

Is there a city planner who cares about old Pearland? This is not the only bad decision that has been made about the placement of businesses recently .

I think this is a terrible idea! Odor, rats, vermin! Why put an establishment like this in a residential area? Everyone really should think about this, especially being so close to a school.

This is a terrible idea. If you have ever lived within miles downwind of a slaughter house, the smell is horrendous. You will also have problems with rodents not to mention the lowering of property values.

@Islifefair : yes, it will matter. This is not something that should be placed in the heart of a community, much less that close to a school.

@Islifefair : I missed the part about this having anything to do with eminent domain or the ISD, other
than the location being close to a school.

@asg002 : As the writer of the quote you used in your original post, I feel it necessary to correct a mistake I made in the information. I was way off on the estimated the distance from the proposed slaughter house to Lawhon Elementary School. The actual distance which I actually measured today is actually less than 750 feet using the scale of the map provided by the city. If you can, would you be willing to edit your post to show the correct distance? Thank you.

@asg002 : There was an article in the Houston Chronicle today about the proposed slaughter house in Pearland. It makes it sound like it's going to be nothing more than a cozy little meat and produce market. So let me clear that up. THIS NOT GOING TO BE JUST A MEAT MARKET as this article makes it seem and some people who have been following my posts on Facebook have commented. It will include holding pens for live animals waiting to be slaughtered, a killing floor where the animals are slaughtered, and an area where the dead animals are disemboweled, cleaned, and cut up, just like any other slaughter house. As such, there are numerous factors to consider. They'll be required to wash down the killing floor frequently with strong cleaning chemicals. Where are all that bloody water and those cleaning and disinfecting chemicals going to end up? Running off into the ditches draining into the creek that's 1/4 mile down the road, flowing by homes and the school less than 750 feet away, seeping into the ground water drawn from by the wells that many people in Pearland and Brookside still use? And how and where are they going to dispose of all the animal wastes and inedible parts of the animals that will be generated? And how long are all those rotting and stinking wastes going to sit around in bins baking in our extreme Texas heat between disposals? What efforts are going to be made to prevent the stench from the holding pens and all those slaughter wastes wafting on the wind across neighborhoods and the school yard less than 750 feet away? Absolutely no information regarding these questions has been provided, and as far as I can tell from the information available regarding the application for the permit, there has been no environmental impact study done. And one final, but rather important consideration is the devastating financial impact the construction of this slaughter house will have on the property values of homeowners surrounding this facility for a radius of a number of miles. So no, it's not going to be just nice little neighborhood market.
