ALVIN, Texas - A 2-year-old girl was mauled to death by her family's dog Friday afternoon. How terrible and 😔

From BCSO:

"On 10-12-18, at approximately 5:00 PM, the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office received an emergency 911 call in reference to a child that had been attacked by a dog. Deputies arrived on scene along with an Animal Control Officer with the City of Alvin, and confirmed that a 2 year old girl had been attacked by the family dog. The child had sustained severe injuries from the attack and was found to be unresponsive. Despite attempts, the child was unable to be revived and was pronounced deceased on scene. The body of the child was transported to the Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office for examination and autopsy. The family dog was found to be aggressive upon the arrival of first responders and was tranquilized on scene by animal control officers. The animal was euthanized on scene and will be transported to a lab for analysis. The dog appears to be a Kerr mix breed upon initial inspection however the investigation is still ongoing. Investigators learned that the child had just returned home with the family from a shopping trip and was in the yard with the dog playing. After a very brief time a family member came out of the home to find the child had been attacked by the dog and notified 911 for assistance. No charges are expected to be filed at this time as this appears to be a horrific and tragic accident."

Where were her parents?! I have dogs, have always had dogs, but some people should not even have a stuffed dog. Poor baby.

Sad and crazy at the same time! I have always had dogs and they took good care of my kids. Not sure if it is the breed or the parents

@Islifefair : It is a combination. ANY dog can bite. Leave an untrained dog and an untrained child and it can get ugly. While parents think it is cute to let climb on dogs, pull ears, and inflict general abuse, it isn't and you are asking for trouble. Dogs do not have human logic, and while they are often patient beyond belief, you should not expect that of them. 20 seconds after a dog does something, the memory is gone. Your dog tears something up, three hours later you hit the dog for it, they don't know why. It's like calling a dog to you to beat on it for something, the dog learns if it comes, it gets hurt. I do not hit my dogs, ever. My dogs live in the house. When my kids were too little to know not to hurt the dogs, they were not left alone with them. We taught them from day one how to pet. Learn dog body language, remove the dog or the child from the situation. Don't ever say, "Oh, my dog would never bite." It only takes once, and can happen quicker than you can stop it. Prevention is the key.

Atlanta Ga news is reporting the family had returned from a shopping trip and sent the 2 year old outside to play with the dog. When someone checked on her, she was being mauled. They called 911, but the child died at the site. The dog, a yellow cur, has been euthanized. No charges will be filled.

@susieq : Agree, not familiar with this breed, but there are some breed's that should never be left alone with a small child. My GSD is very protective of small children but I would never leave her unsupervised, PERIOD. So sad for all involved.

@Sophie1 : Dogs can get very excited by kids laughing during play. High prey dogs can kick into hunt mode and see that child as prey. It happens.

In case you haven't guessed yet, I am one of "those" animal people. I take in strays, love my animals beyond belief, and have had my vet tell me he "wants to come back as one of my pets when he dies." I am the crazy lady who hands out pictures of what a dog's feet look like after a couple of minutes on a hot street to people walking their dogs, and starts discussions about good dog food with complete strangers. I AM that person who called the police and animal control if you made the mistake of leaving your pet in a car on a hot day, and have helped arrange rescue and adoptions all over the country. I don't hate any breed, but do believe you need to understand and be able to care for any animal you adopt. Pets are for a lifetime, not a quick emotional moment.
