There's a new movie coming out later this year called 'Jurica Road', and a lot of the filming was done right here in Pearland.

First off, let me introduce you to one of the lead actors...Pearland resident Johnny Ray Gibbs. He plays Warthog, a member of the "Hounds of Jurica" motorcycle club...As well as the bartender in the picture right below here. Johnny Ray reached out to us late last year about a new film called 'Jurica Road' that was being made in and around Pearland...And he asked if we wanted to come on set and check it out. I've personally never seen a movie being filmed, so it was a no-brainer to accept his invite. Emoticon

The set was actually at Two Dogs Saloon on Main St. It seemed perfect for the biker-gang references and characters in the movie, which is why Johnny Ray suggested it to the Director.

"The owner of Two Dogs, Kathy Hill Coler, was very generous in letting us use her bar," said Johnny Ray. "She even loaned us one of her real bartenders, Stephani McLelland, to keep her regular customers happy...Who by the way got to perform as extras for the bar scenes. Kathy herself even played a customer."

Brazoria County PCT 3 Constable Buck Stevens was also on hand to help with traffic during a wicked bike scene.

The folks behind 'Jurica Road' are Producer Susan Nwokedi, Director/Writer Don Okolo and Assistant Director Curtis Vonn. Nwokedi is a filmmaker with more than 15 years of film and entertainment industry experience in acting, screenplay writing, producing and directing. Okolo is a professor at Texas Southern university and an award-winning filmmaker.

They were obviously VERY busy during that day of filming at Two Dogs Saloon, but they still took the time to say hello and answer a couple of questions before putting their game faces on and the "ACTION!" commenced. Emoticon

Some of the other actors in 'Jurica Road' are Dominic Pace, Chaz Taylor, Timothy Eric, Craig Whitford, Carl Bailey, Michael Scanlin and Lacey Cash. Chaz wasn't in the scene they were shooting while I was there, so I got to chat with him for a minute. He hails from the Houston area and used to be a pro wrestler just like his late father Tugboat Taylor.

Outside of the bar scenes, a huge chunk of 'Jurica Road' is being shot at a private location just south of here, which used to be a youth camp. It's abandoned and run down now, but Johnny Ray is hoping to fix that if the movie does well. "The place is owned by an elderly pastor...A very nice gentleman," said Johnny Ray. "If this movie is a success, I made my self a promise to go back and restore that beautiful old youth camp."

For those asking what 'Jurica Road' is about, here's a quick synopsis of the flick...

Tony’s car breaks down on a long stretch of desolate roadway…on a rainy night, to boot. A beacon of light in the distance, in the far reaches of vast savannah, giving him hope that there is help after all. Tony, and his nine-year old sister, Bobbie, finally reach the barn with the glow of light, and enter, looking for help. They had, inadvertently, walked into hell fire. The encounter that follows is searing and heart-wrenching…almost unimaginable in its scope.

Thank you to Johnny Ray and the cast/crew of 'Jurica Road' for allowing me to visit during shooting and letting us tell your story. All of us here at PDC wish y'all great success. Emoticon

The movie should be out sometime this summer, so look for it. In the meantime, follow their progress on the 'Jurica Road' Facebook page --> www.facebook.com/jur icaroad/

@PearlandDotCom : That's so cool! It's so nice when a movie is filmed in your community and in a small way it's put on stage.
I remember vividly in the 70's I got to meet and shake Sam Elliot's hand while I was working at the Texas State Railroad in Rusk, Texas. They filmed the movie, "The Rough Riders" at the Texas State Railroad, used one of the Locomotives, train cars and stopped several places along the railway to film. Sam Elliot loved the old steam locomotives and stopped and talked with us about 30 minutes one day after filming. Such a down to earth, genuine and gracious man. I never will forget that. We never saw Tom Berenger though.

The Great Debaters starring Denzel Washington also had parts of it filmed at the Texas State Railroad in the 70s , but we never saw Mr Washington.

I will be watching for "Jurica Road"!!

Arlington Road was shot in Pearland too. The movie was release in 1999. It still pops up on cable from time to time. It stared Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins. Its not a bad movie either if you like thrillers.

They shot a lot in Dixie Woods off Dixie Farm Road; primarily on Red Bud Ct and Evergreen.

We saw a lot of filming and some of the neighbors were even in the film as extras.

@Maria60 : Yes, we were hanging around our work truck one evening when they were finishing up a day of filming, basically we were just lurking LOL.
His rental car was parked not far from our truck. He saw us and started walking over to us. I looked at my 2 other coworkers and said, "HOLY CRAP ! HE'S COMING OVER HERE!"
Walked up, stuck his hand out and talked like he was our next door neighbor.
Just a regular good guy that deserved to make it big time. So very very nice.

@KellyArcher : We saw it being filmed as well! We lived in Dixie Woods on Evergreen Dr and the first scene where you see the mailboxes and it’s in slow motion, those we our mailboxes. We had notes on our door daily, telling us the times we could drive in our out of our street.
Joan Cusak is in that movie too.

If i recall, several films were done here. Apollo 13 being one as well. Hanks even ate at La Casita and Lilas.

In fact at one time, there were so many, that a movie company had a lay-down yard at Veteran's and Magnolia.

Pearland has been a hot spot.

Don’t forget back in the day when parts of Urban Cowboy was filmed in Pearland. A guy I went to high school with was an extra standing right next to JohnTravolta in a scene. Too cool!

A made for TV crime show, The Houston Knights, starring Michael Pare', Michael Beck and Leigh Taylor-Young was partially filmed in Pearland at the old Pearland Airport on S. Main (immediately south of of Walnut near the US Post Office) back in the spring of '86; (the Pearland group I was a member of were extras in the film). That TV show was released in March of '87 and had I believe, a two year run before it was cancelled.

On the set, the two male actors and the Director (fellow named Jay, but can't recall his last name just now) were most courteous and friendly, asking questions of our group throughout the filming. The female actress was totally unfriendly and stayed totally in her Star trailer unless it was her turn to be on the set, but she quickly retreated back to the trailer once she finished her lines. While on that set for two full days of filming, we witnessed a total transformation of one of Houston Helicopter's Bell red & black copters change into an olive drab Huey gunship; three plain Ford sedans change into HPD patrol cars - complete with exact markings, paint colors and lights, etc., and a salvaged MG sportscar get blown to bits. It was truly amazing what movie film crews could do to entertain folks. Another thing we learned was that actors and film crews really eat well while on sets, as we too were offered (and took advantage of) the unbelievable meals served those two days. We also became fully aware of why actors are so highly paid - they actually earn that high pay by many times working from early in the morning (before daybreak) until late at night (well after midnight on some sets), and they have to constantly repeat their lines film take after film take.

Another great movie actor, Steve McQueen, once visited the east side Shadycrest neighborhood home of a well known Houston after market Harley motorcycle shop owner; (where the owner kept some of his prized bikes stored). After looking the bikes over closely, McQueen bought a couple of them! After the actor's death, his wife contacted the bike owner and offered him the opportunity to buy back those bikes as well as other classics that McQueen owned.
