According to reports from PPD, on Monday, January 29, 2018, at approximately 8:40 pm, officers responded to a residence to make contact with a person who advised her children had received disturbing messages via the social media app Snapchat from a juvenile her children know.

The message relayed a possible threat at Berry Miller Junior High, 3301 Manvel Rd. in Pearland. Officers conducted an investigation which resulted in charges being accepted by the Brazoria County DA’s Office against a 14-year-old male student for Terroristic Threat.

The juvenile student was taken into custody and transported to the Brazoria County Juvenile Detention Facility.

@PearlandDotCom : What used to be threatening comments from one student to another has escalated as technology emboldens both kids and adults to say things they're never say face-to-face. And today the threats must be taken seriously. So sad.

@PearlandDotCom : I hate seeing this behavior anywhere, but especially in our home town.

@PearlandDotCom: even my 6th grader (middle school) student heard about the threat last night. I'm glad parents took action and PD responded quickly.

I have two teen boys, and they can say some stupid crap with the intention of it being taken as joking or sarcasm. That kind of stuff doesn't always convey properly in text format. I hope they never get misunderstood and have police landing on our doorstep.

Before I get attacked, I'm not saying that is what happened here. I'm merely expressing concern over my own children since I know they are still immature and truly don't have a full comprehension of the consequences (intended and unintended) of their words and actions.

@Stealth83 : I don't think it's quite that easy. Kids aren't using Snapchat on their computers, it's on their phones. I guess a parent could remove data from the child's phone plan, but then that takes away their ability to use the phone for a muriad of productive things. And honestly, I've watched my kids use Snapchat to work on group projects and get help for homework.

I remember being a rebellious teenager. My parents didn't know what I was doing if I didn't want them to know. Technology has just changed the face of how kids hide what they are doing from their parents. What we thought should give us more insight also gives them more tools to hide with (Snapchat messages disappear, leaving no trace).

Parental intervention is definitely required. My kids have heard of things already that I was never exposed to that young. We have truly taken away the innocence of our children, yet we want to continue to coddle and baby them as though they haven't been exposed to all these adult matters. We have to be willing to have open and frank conversations with our children, and many of us aren't.

@Stealth83 : I'm raising the last two of four... The issues they face have continued to evolve, and I've had to keep up. A few months ago, one got his license, and I gave him keys to a vehicle and trusted him to be responsible. And so it goes with phones, sex, drugs, alcohol... we have to teach them, give them the tools, trust them to be responsible, and then be there to pick up the pieces when they screw up.

@DrewLundgren : When I was in high school, many years ago, I was terrorized by kids on the bus. One kid burned me by holding a hot lighter to my side. His buddy threatened me with a knife. I got the latter fellow in trouble by reporting it to the police. This stuff is nothing new. That was back in the late '70s/early '80s.

@Stealth83 : sad but true, but speaking from experience a few parents do the same. So it's a difficult when this is learned in the home.
