Have you ever wondered, "Why do officer's do that?" Would like to gain working knowledge of the duties of a police officer? Consider registering for a Citizen's Police Academy class!
Students will receive instruction on Thursday nights from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on the different aspects of policing. Course topics include the police hiring process, Penal Code and Transportation Code, Arrest Procedures and Crash Investigation. There is no cost to attend. Graduates will have the option of joining the Pearland Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association. The PCPAAA is a service organization dedicated to supporting the mission of the Pearland Police Department.
The CPA is open to all residents that live or work in the Pearland area. Applicants are subject to a basic background check to ensure the integrity of the program.
A minimum age requirement of 18-years is imposed, with the exception of a 17-year-old if attending with an immediate family member.
The purpose of the program is to allow citizens to meet the men and women who serve them, to educate citizens in the "how" and "why" of law enforcement, and to provide Police Officers the opportunity to meet and hear from the citizens they serve. The first Citizens Police Academy in Pearland was started in the spring of 1995. There are now over 600 graduates of the Pearland CPA program. The CPA curriculum has become a major focus of job responsibility for the Crime Prevention Officer. The academy is held each spring and fall and stretches for ten weeks of instruction in the various tasks associated with law enforcement.
The class has varying instructional periods on topics such as: Officer Survival, Patrol Procedures, SWAT, Criminal Investigations, Narcotics, Traffic Laws, Juvenile Laws and Penal Code. In addition to the ten weeks of classroom instruction there is also an opportunity to visit the
Brazoria County Detention Facility and to act as the officer in mock building searches and traffic stops. The Pearland CPA is a free, community oriented policing program designed for the citizens of Pearland. The CPA is open to all residents that live or work in the Pearland area. Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years old, except an applicant who is 17 may attend with an adult family member. All applicants must pass a background investigation and complete an application.
