(via City of Pearland)

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has authorized the initiation of Right-Of-Way (ROW) acquisition for the McHard Road project. Acquisition is set to begin after the signed and sealed ROW maps are approved by TxDOT scheduled for mid-November.

The $43.6 million project includes the construction of approximately 3.5 miles of four lane divided concrete curb and gutter roadway with signalized intersections. It also includes sidewalks, drainage, detention pond design, signage and pavement markings. The roadway will extend from the intersection of Mykawa and McHard Road west to tie into the existing roadway just east of Cullen Blvd.

Proposed right of way maps were submitted for review by TxDOT in August. Upon approval, appraisers will then use the maps to make offers to the residents. Initial introductory notices have been sent out to respective residents within the area and site visits are being scheduled.

The extension is part of the City’s Thoroughfare Plan to reduce traffic on FM 518/Broadway by providing an alternate east/west route between SH 288 and Pearland Parkway. Final Environmental Assessments were submitted to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in late April and the final Drainage Report was approved in March.

This project was submitted for federal/state funding to the Houston Galveston Area Council’s Call for Projects in 2013, as part of the Transportation Improvement Program. As such, the project will include 80 percent federal funds reimbursed through TxDOT with a 20 percent local match. The project is expected to go out for bid in January 2019 and is in line with City Council’s Strategic Priorities of Fiscal Responsibility and Sustainable Infrastructure.

I think it's a very good thing. I've only lived in Pearland for 4 months but I live off Broadway. The traffic is really bad! Opening up McHard should be good. Also, I hope Mykawa gets repaved. It's a very bumpy road.

I've never found it so inconvenient that that many people need to lose their homes and land. There are ways around it. it's sad to me.

Agreed. I'm sure you know we don't own our homes or land, just lease it from the government.

The project may alleviate traffic on 518 but it's going to take away my more peaceful backroad route to get from one side to the other.

McHard rd was a private dead end street for years, making this a major thorough way will not just help with 518 traffic, but will increase the flow of traffic on McHard rd that will cause more of a back up from 288 to cullen. The speeding on that rd, along with the non working street lights are dangerous ALREADY. But you can't stop progress, let's just hope and pray for a balance of good and bad/ pros and cons to make this a wise choice for all of Pearland

@Maria60 would you think it was good if they were taking land that had been in your family for 2-3 generations?

And, those whose homes are in the area are not going to get what they should for their properties. I'd be nervous, upset and pretty much ticked off if my home was there too.

@GoOilers No I guess not. I’ve never had any land handed down to me. I honestly don’t know how I would feel. I guess it would depend on the circumstances I would be in.

Since the city has been clearing land on the south side of McHard we can hear the traffic on McHard now. We live in Southdown. So between noise from McHard, the new flight paths for southwest/other commercial airlines and flight life headed to Memorial hospital on 288 our backyard sanctuary is no longer quiet. 😡

@Sherry3898 Not to mention we're going to be 'blessed' with the flyover ramps and T-ramps for the new toll road between the lanes of 288. Moved here 10 years ago and really enjoyed the peace and quiet on the patio. We can't enjoy a moment of it anymore with all the racket. McHard being opened to Cullen has already begun a traffic nightmare with the people racing down it and running the red light at the entrance to our subdivisions. Definitely not pleased about the further extension. Take some of the racket and traffic for E - W thoroughfare further south please.
