It's nice to be nice
Today I was on the phone, for 3 freakin' hours, with a very polite man in India, trying to get my printer working. While waiting for tests to be run, we chatted about my ideas of India, among other things. I mentioned I love Indian Food (I live right near the Ghandi District), I've watched Bollywood movies, I recently attended a Holy Fest. My exposure/knowledge is superficial at best, as I told him.
He said something that upset me. In 6 months, he says, I'm the first cust who was polite to him. His accent was there, but it was understandable. He went out of his way to be helpful. He spent 3 hours trying to help me and walk me thru fixing a hardware problem I've been calling about for 2 days.
The upshot, he's getting a major company to send me a brand new printer! For $1 dollar, refundable if I send the malfunctioning one back! I just got notification from that company that it is going to arrive less than a week,
He said that Americans tend to be the worst, very rude, judgmental, and wrong. I find that sad. He said that not only am I first that had any knowledge of his country, but that I'm the first one who was ever nice to him. In 6 months! That's appalling.
Next time you call cust service and get someone with an accent, just chat for a moment, attune your ear, and then proceed. Don't argue that they're wrong for doing this, their employers are choosing to move overseas. It's not the people they hire who are at fault, and those very people can do great things to fix your problem.
