This was my favorite playground ride! And, I always managed to hang on. The very thought of getting on one of those today makes my stomach churn.

Fun times. Started at the edge and worked out way to center while it was spinning like crazy

This was one of my favorites on the playground. I still prefer a ride that spins vs. a ride that goes up and down. Tilt-a-whirl - yes! Ferris wheel - NO!

The slide in the background would be way too high to meet any current safety regulations.

Sure did. And a slide that was much higher than considered safe today, AND it was metal. Swings with chains and no safety features, that were also higher than allowed today. Unless there was a broken bone involved, you got up, dusted yourself off, and kept playing.

I remember playing on a huge rocket on the playground at Herman Park when I was a kid. That thing had a super high slide. Well at least it was super high to me as a kid.

@susieq: I remember swings with chains. Did you ever get your hair stuck in the chains? Oh that was awful!

@Juniebird : More than once. Remember the mud puddle at the bottom of the slide? We were always told not to play there when it was big, but of course we did. We tried to miss it, but that didn't always work. Spent the rest of the day in wet shoes and socks, after the teacher made us clean the shoes off.

High metal slides, wooden see saws, and this spinning apparatus - how did we survive so much fun????

Yes this type of play equipment was so much fun. Go down the metal slides and get my legs burnt. Boy that was painful but went back for more. Yes I also got my hair stuck in the metal rings on the chains of the wooden swings. Would go really high on the swings in hopes of not falling off. Wooden sea saws were fun. Loved it all. Now the play equipment is so protected and boring. We even had sandboxes to play in.
