People obviously do not understand A/C and thermostats. An A/C can only cool at best 20 degrees from outside air and thi has nothing to do with it. The thi is only how it feels to your skin not your A/C. If it's 100 outside the best it can do is 80 so it doesn't matter if you set the thermostat for 72, 75, or 78 the A/C will run constantly because it will never reach the set point. So setting the thermostat higher does not save anything! So people telling you to set your thermostat higher to save electric are ignorant!

Well, higher means higher temp in my family, so yes, setting it higher will help, since it won't go on as often. Since I don't like it lower than about 77 mine cycles all day and all night lately.

@Michael1960 : They always seem to be placed in some small, cramped area, it's fine right there, but then the rest of the place is subject to windows, drafts, etc.
@Blackbird : most of our windows have insulation in them. It's the same stuff they put on the outside of new house before they brick them. It's thin so it's perfect. It's really helps when I work nights and have to sleep during the day. It's pitch black in our bedrooms.
we try and do other things on really hot days to help keep cool besides my little crazy ice cooler like black out curtains , window tint stuff like that

@wyldbill : If you are fortunate enough to have your house facing the right way or a lot of shade trees around your house then your A/C will be able to keep up with the demand because of enough cold air is recirculating. I live in an apartment and there are no trees and it faces west. My A/C doesn't shut off till 11pm.
My Thermostat is set on 78, day and night. But in the afternoon it gets cold in the house. Just don't get it as we don't touch the thermostat and it still says 78.
