More horrid news

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Police are looking for the suspects who shot a man in his 70s during an attempted robbery on the Gulf Freeway Friday night.
The man was driving with his wife on the Gulf Freeway feeder road at about 10 p.m., according to police.
When the man turned onto Broad Street police said two young men riding bicycles rode up next to their mini van and pointed a gun. The man was then shot in the hand.
"We're trying to figure out exactly if he was trying to rob him for the car or what but he started shooting into the vehicle. They took off in the van. They actually took one of the bicycles underneath the van which is still stuck underneath the car," said Lt. R. Wilkens.
The two suspects got away.
The man is expected to be OK, and his wife was not hurt, police said.

What a terrifying experience for both the man and woman.
Sounds like they were trying to escape by driving away.

I wonder if they were lost.
That's a dangerous area at 10 o'clock at night.
I pray the gentleman recovers well.

@susieq : I avoid I45 entirely, but that's more Pearland, I'd think.

There used to be a pretty large homeless settlement at several of the overpasses on 45. Broadway was where one of them was located. I didn't even like to be there during the day. There is also a "bar" on the feeder headed back south just before Monroe. It has been busted for prostitutes several times. Last time I was over there, it really bothered me. Some of those "ladies" looked like little girls playing dress up, and not in a good way. The hit the streets around 3 in the afternoon.
The only reason I am over there anymore is to go to the dentist. I have been using them for years, but I think I am going to have to change. He even had an armed man come in and try to rob his office.

Scary! And you're right, I looked up 45 and Broadway, and it's labeled S Houston on the map.
As for the ladies of the all-hours, I live right in The Track of world wide fame, so it's fairly common to see them on the main roads.

@Blackbird : I don't know what the track of fame is. I probably don't want to know. It just breaks my heart to see all these young teens starting down this path.

@susieq : You must hang out on more respectable web sites than I do, but Houston is famous for our 'ladies'.

@Blackbird : Ladies I can deal with. Babies, I can't.

A few years ago, my girls took me for lunch to a Red Lobster over close to the dome. As we sat talking, a, man came in. HE was covered in jewelry, nice suit. He had 8 teen girls with him. Many looked like they had forgotten their clothing, or at least most of it. As they started to order, one of them decided on calamari, because she was allergic to sea food. Out of the group, there was one girl, who did not look very happy. She was very quiet, I don't think she said anything. I wanted to go and ask her if she needed help, my daughters wouldn't let me. As they finished their meal, a van pulled up. "Big Mama is here!" and they started running out to jump in the van. "Daddy" paid the bill and followed them out, he got in, and after all the girls kissed "mama" they got in. Please, do not suggest this was a family, it looked like a United Nations delegation. I have thought of that one child many times. Needless to say, this is not an area of town my girls take me to anymore.
