Today in the garden......... Today, I called an end to green bean season. I pulled them all up, and STILL got enough for another meal off the vines. I then took the broccoli and celery from another bed where I didn't like they way they look, and moved them where I had the beans. In that one bed, we put generic garden soil. I have added and added stuff to it, but I am about ready to empty it and start over. I guess my first clue should have been raking large pieces of glass and rocks out of it. The only thing that really seems to grow there is Sugar Snap peas, which may go in there the first of January. They survived last years big freeze, very hardy plants.

Start with something easy, Square Foot Gardening is a good book. Raised beds are the way to go, 100%. I requested new ones for Christmas a couple of years ago. Quick and easy to put together. Get them at least 16 inches deep, better root systems.

You can learn, just don't be too hard on yourself. I have been doing this my whole life. My daddy's garden was about 3 acres. I dropped seeds, helped weed, and dropped plants in holes he made for them. I started learning to can about as soon as I could stand at a sink and wash jars. Some things will do great, others, well, we just don't talk about those. Heck, start with lettuce, that stuff will just about grow in the cracks on a sidewalk.

I have a copy of that very book, one of the few things unpacked so far. Since I'm now a second floor apt dweller, I could long-term lend it to someone who wanted to see it.
Another great one is Texas Gardening. I have that too, but honestly bought it while still in Dallas, but I assume they have Houston tips, too. I'm not sure why, but they weren't packed together, so that one is still hidden.

I have decided I am going to make my sister a bunch of mug cakes. She lives alone, does not feel like cooking much, and loves sweets. The mix is simple, I will measure out the correct amounts into plastic bags, all she will have to do is add water and put it in the microwave. I will throw in some tubes of frosting. I am also going to make her some instant potato soup mix, which she loves. Tomorrow, I am going to start making a flannel nightgown for her. All of these are things she will enjoy, and yet are not expensive. Postage will be the killer, but I am very, very good at packing those boxes full. I don't mind doing gifts like this, I just hate trying to buy things that people will like.

Most important thing with gardening is the soil. Buy the good kind.....not the kind from the box stores.
That is total waste of your money and work. Rose soil works for most things.

@Blackbird : You can buy Miracle Grow Rose Soil at the big box stores. I heard that on Garden Line years ago. You can also start your own compost. Any vegetable material, peeling, seeds, egg shells you have cooked and crushed, some coffee and tea grounds. NO FAT, bones, or meat scraps. I can't remember the ratio, but we put our organic stuff, and then put a layer of good soil. Do not buy topsoil, it is not what you think it is, go with a good blend. I know there are some places that sell soil by the truck load, but I am not familiar with them. Don't buy an off brand, that is how I ended up with broken glass and rocks in one of the beds I will be doing over this spring.

@susieq : Ha! I tried lettuce once and it so bitter we couldn't eat it. But I do well with other things ❤️

@cocosmom : It all depends on the type and when you plant it. If it gets hot before it is ready, it is bitter. One year, I decided to try growing ice berg. I didn't use all of it, and one morning I went out to find a head of it split with a spike growing out of it. It seems it had gone to seed.
