I spent some time at a Food Bank today, and spoke to the people getting food. Here are some things I learned from those in need:
1. Everyone donates Kraft Mac and Cheese in the box. They can rarely use it because it needs milk and butter which is hard to get from regular food banks.
2. Boxed milk is a treasure, as kids need it for cereal which they also get a lot of.
3. Everyone donates pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles.
4. They cannot eat all the awesome canned veggies and soup unless you put a can opener in too or buy pop tops.
5. Oil is a luxury but needed for Rice a-Roni which they also get a lot of.
6. Spices or salt and pepper would be a real Christmas gift.
7. Tea bags and coffee make them feel like you care.
8. Sugar and flour are treats.
9. They fawn over fresh produce donated by farmers and grocery stores.
10. Seeds are cool in Spring and Summer because growing can be easy for some.
11. They rarely get fresh meat.
12. Tuna and crackers make a good lunch.
13. Hamburger Helper goes nowhere without ground beef.
14. They get lots of peanut butter and jelly but usually not sandwich bread.
15. Butter or margarine is nice too.
16. Eggs are a real commodity.
17. Cake mix and frosting makes it possible to make a child's birthday cake.
18. Dishwashing detergent is very expensive and is always appreciated.
19. Feminine hygiene products are a luxury and women will cry over that.
20. Everyone loves Stove Top Stuffing.
In all the years I have donated food at the Holidays, I bought what I thought they wanted, but have never asked. I am glad I did. If you are helping a Family this Christmas, maybe this can help you tailor it more. It does for me!

My best friend's daughter was helping pack Christmas boxes for military families on base. They made sure that each box got a bottle of dish washing liquid, laundry detergent, and a bar of soap.

The disheartening thing I have run across at many of the food banks that I volunteered at in the past was that people would pick and choose the food they wanted from the pre packed boxes that we would pack for them and then proceed to throw away in the TRASH what they didn't want right in the parking lot of the donation center and then proceed to drive to the next food bank for free groceries.

My daughter sponsors a family each year. This family is very fortunate to have my daughter. The whole month of December she donates food each week. Gives them clothing each week and makes sure the two kids have presents. They are very appreciative.

I donate through my church which screens families. Often a $20 Kroger, HEB gift card is more practical.

I always donate to families in need. It's unfortunate people take advantage of those that are truly in need. God sees everything.

The one problem many people don't talk about is called Period Poverty. This is a lack of sanitary products for women and young girls in this country and really around the world. One of the teachers in my neighborhood collects and fills make up bags with supplies, and any girl at school can go to her and get supplies. It would be great if more teachers did this.

It's hard to believe anyone especially with kids would stand on a corner begging for help when there are so many resources in a city as big as Houston, unless they have substance abuse or mental issues then they truly have nowhere to go. I guess It's just a lot easier to pull on a heart string than put in an honest day's work.

@susieq : It wasn't until I did a short IT project for an ISD I realized how hidden poverty really is and how much it really effects the kids the most. I would see hungry dirty kids being dropped off in Escalades and mom's with a fresh set of nails and Louis Vuitton bag, but the kids are on reduced cost lunch.

I saw a woman with a tiny baby over on the corner of 45 the other day begging. Another one has been taking his small daughter, maybe 3 or 4 to the 45 Dixie exit and "selling" flowers. DH said it made him feel like buying all the flowers, but thought the man would just get more. Another day a woman had the same child out there. At least she had a chair for her.
