Pearland Police Jugging Incident Please Read for your Safety.

The Pearland Police Department and Houston Police Department recently conducted joint "Bank Jugging" operations in Pearland, resulting in one male taken into custody. Bank Jugging refers to a scheme in which an offender(s) follows a bank customer suspected of having large quantities of cash as they leave the bank. The suspects(s) then follow the customer and look for an opportunity to burglarize their vehicles and rob them directly. Here are some tips to follow to stay safe and prevent yourself from becoming a victim of Bank Jugging:
1. Be aware of your surroundings: Be vigilant when arriving and departing. We encourage you to be on the lookout for suspicious activity and make sure you are not being followed.
2. Conceal your money when leaving the bank: Never carry cash in your hand when leaving the bank, and never leave cash in your vehicle.
3. Plan your trip ahead of time: If you have multiple errands to run, go to the bank last. If you think you are being targeted/followed, call 911.

Some people are commenting on the paper tags. I see paper tags quite a bit while driving on 518.
Actually see on occasion 'no' licence plates, and wonder how does that happen Emoticon

With the holiday season around the corner, the crime will increase. This is a good heads up to stay vigilant!
Another one is when we put many shopping bags in our trunk and then go back into the mall. Our car is a target to be broken into.

I think people are doing more and more shopping on line. With it being delivered to your home you don't have to worry about getting mugged. But you do have to worry about someone taking it from your porch. Maybe have it delivered to the office

Houston is like paper tag central. All you have to do is look on Face Book Marketplace and you can find paper drive out tags for as little as $30. It would seem they must be easy to duplicate, and impossible to trace.

Amazing that you can just buy those tags.

I had this happen to me earlier this year. It cost me another $300 to replace my passenger window.

Also there are comments on the original post that this may be an 'inside job'.
- That someone in the bank(s) must be telling them about these transactions.

I don't like being suspicious in that way, although by all means, pay attention to what is around to protect yourself.

Yes, it is alarming. I've noticed on news reports of these crimes, it is usually victims
that were alone when they were attacked.

You also need to make sure your passenger doors are locked when you stop to get gas. You don't want someone able to take things or even get in your car and hide. I take my keys out and lock my car while pumping gas. The keys go in my pocket. It is much safer to unlock the door just before I get back in the car, and lock right back.

@susieq : excellent tip! Emoticon
I drive an older model car that automatically unlocks doors when turning key
to off position, and doesn't lock again till motor starts running.
So I've had to 'train myself' to push the lock lever.
Keys in pocket!Emoticon

All great advice! I think shopping on line is a good idea. I don't like missing the clearance corners tho.. but being safe is more important.

@Txtoast : Do you have some type of over ride for this? Mine and my husband's are the same. You press the button once, and only the driver's door unlocks, twice unlocks all doors.

@cocosmom : My husband does not want me to shop alone any more. He feels like it just isn't safe. As we have talked about before, I don't carry a purse or check book, just keys and a card.

I have seen too many videos of people creeping into passenger side doors while someone is pumping gas. The car can be taken, or even you can be taken when you get back in. Both are good reasons to NEVER leave your keys in, even for a "minute" and always make sure those doors are locked. It only takes a minute for someone else to get in your car.

I'm scared to shop alone. Can't run fast anymore. Can't fight off an attacker. My guy keeps telling me… leave your purse, you don't need it. Just an ID and a debit card. I think it's time.
