My son is visually impaired and truly requires more sidewalks to be able to get out and about so that he can find work. It is also very frustrating when sidewalks are only a short distance in front of a business. What can we do to petition for more safe pedestrian pathways?

@rt1box1500cr101 : Sorry to hear about the difficulties your son faces in regards to sidewalks. I would recommend going to the city hall and check in the internal process for building more sidewalks! This will be time consuming and the results will take long time because of budget allocations. It may be frustrating for you!

It is my understanding we have over 65 miles of side walks. And we need more?

@tgray : Yes we need more. We don't have them where they are most needed. Not every main thoroughfare or pocket of development is accessible to pedestrians. City council has had some meetings about this, but I don't know what has actually been done. It is a matter of filling in the gaps.

I don't understand why there aren't sidewalks on both sides of the street on many main thoroughfares within Shadow Creek Ranch.

@rt1box1500cr101 : @tgray : Yes we do need more sidewalks I really don't know where the 65 miles of them are. Sure there not in my neighborhood. I see kids walking on the streets as well as grownups and it's dangerous specially the way that some people drive this day.

@Inb0913 : Most of them are on SH 35, and in the neighborhood where the councilman that fought for them lives. It was a completely selfish move on his part several years ago. I think the concession was putting in sidewalks on 35 too. I remember a lot of people being angry over it at the time.

@Stealth83 : what usurped? In every other place I have lived there have been sidewalks to walk on that were put in when the homes were built. HOAs are crazy not to have put them in and they also need to be along every road in the city so people can walk to grocery stores, libraries, etc.

A little history here. Pearland has been a community going back over 150 years. It became an Incorporated city in December of 1959. All streets had open ditches on each side to drain water. Even subdivisions being developed in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's were two lane streets with no sidewalks. Much like the Old Town Site but sidewalks were added there in the 80's. Municipal Districts (MUD's) began in the 80's because the city limits on the west side was only about a mile from the rail road tracks and they built subdivisions to a new standard. Over the years the City began expanding and now goes to the Fort Bend County line to the west. Roads being extended or added have had sidewalks. Look at McHard from 288 to Cullen for example. When the old town site was rehabbed Main (hwy 35) and parts of Broadway (FM 518) got sidewalks.

@tgray : I understand that Pearland used to be a smaller city, but really even the small town I grew up in Nyack, NY had sidewalks all along the main roads. Nyack was founded in 1675. The first store opened in 1804. At that time, they were a small rural community of only 9 homes. Sidewalks and curbs were actually repaired and maintained by the homeowners. There is still an area where there are no sidewalks -it is called Midlands and connects main street with a hotel on top of Hook Mountain that was built and controlled by Boss Tweed. It has been this way for over 150 years, but they are finally putting in sidewalks as of last year, I think.

@tgray : Interesting however I think many of the neighborhoods needs them not saying the ones developed few years back also the ones that were built decades ago. After all we pay taxes I know I do and they are not cheap
