@Inb0913 : Would you or I or any of our children be transported by life flight if we were bitten on the arm by a dog? I seriously doubt it!!! This was during a training exercise so i'm sure the K9 was removed off the officers arm and he was given first aid immediately. Regardless I wish and pray for a speedy recovery for the officer.

@Inb0913 : @MalluGuy : @Stealth83 : I thought during training with the dogs they were supposed to wear protective suits to prevent this. How far was the closest emergency room? That is a little excessive and wasting tax dollars. Hope he is ok though!

@Soccer2018 : He probably was wearing a bite suit but the dog may have been able to bite through. See below. Action starts at 5:10 if you want to skip the first part of the video.

@MalluGuy : You might be airlifted. It probably depends on how severe the bite is.

Hospital Trauma centers have different levels and Houston only has three level ones, two in the Med Center and one in Galveston. With catastrophic injury you need to be in a level one and quick.

According to a paramedic, one of the "you might want to consider Life Flight" criteria that his department uses is the death of another passenger in the same vehicle compartment. I thought I read that there was a fatality on the scene on the Katy Freeway yesterday, so that alone could make a paramedic more likely to consider Life Flight.

The decision is made by the first responders on the scene about whether or not to call for Life Flight.

@Dorothy : My son had a 2cm cut on the back of his head from soccer and was bleeding - more than a normal kid due to his special heart and medication. When we took him to the closest urgent care they stated they couldn't help him and due to traffic contacted an ambulance. The EMT asked us if he wanted to be life flighted or they would take us all the way to UTMB Galveston. Both the EMT and myself felt that life flight was not necessary. He said that he is supposed to offer it to us. 3 staples later and being hungry :-) he was fine.

@Soccer2018 : I'm assuming the city probably made the call for life flight to prevent future litigation from the human officer against the city, for a city k9 police officer attacking him. I don't think the short trip to the med center was that much faster in a helicopter. They could have had him there by ambulance (which is right next door) just as fast. Instead they would of had to locate a helicopter wait for it to get to the police department. Clear a place for it to land. Load him up and get him to the hospital. I'm sure it only cost a couple of thousand dollars of local taxpayers money. If Aron Ralston can live through cutting his own arm off to survive I don't think a dog bite to the arm could have been that life threatening. Especially with immediate medical attention which was right next door, and with first aid trained Police Officers on sight. This was not the usual wild multiple pit bull mauling like we usually hear about.

I don't think anybody but a First Responder is qualified to make a decision on how to transport anybody especially a Police Officer. The dog may have severed a major artery. None of us know. I personally pray that the officer was treated with the best of care and is currently recovering.
