Hands-Free Pearland??

Loading Image...

I'm sure most of you saw it...But for those that didn't, Sugar Land has voted on and passed a "Hands-Free" driving/cellphone policy.

It prohibits drivers from using their phones (or touching any electronic device) while operating a vehicle. The only exception is when there is an emergency.

The fine is pretty costly too...$500!

I don't think it's in the works here or anything, but I'm curious...Would you support a hands-free cellphone policy here in Pearland?

I don't text when I am driving...now if I am sitting at a red light and need to respond I do it then...sometimes it has taken 3 red lights before I can send. Calls are automatically on my car 🚗 pushing that button if I want to answer is no different I feel than anything else you touch in your car...radio, windows, shifting gears....

I would definitely back it. I am so sick of getting behind drivers that are barely moving and it's all because they are texting or dialing. Someone almost sideswiped me today because of it! When I visit Austin it's hands free and very nice. The traffic is moving and there is no frustration due to phone usage. Most cars have blue tooth now. So easy to talk without touching your phone. OK, rant over!! lol

Well it works in Austin so I'm sure it would work here. I do not consider it as "big brother" but safer driving, less road rage, less wrecks and less frustration. We were fine not talking on phones in the "old days" so I really think we could pull over or use our blue tooth. Definitely don't text when vehicle is moving! That's my opinion.

...consider the status of Austin, we (Pearland ) might be getting that dependent on government control before long, but I will hopefully be departed from this earth prior to that.

$500 is way too high, maybe $100 fine at most, at least for first offense.
I lived in Sugar Land for many years before moving here. Everything there is about raising money for the city, by taxes or fines, or whatever they can think up.

Well, I've just always wanted there to be some type of law regarding cell phones. If you look at the stats it seems that there are so many wrecks now and especially with the 18 wheelers. Anyway, maybe the good LORD will come before then and take us all to Heaven and we won't need a cell phone! lol

I did a research project on this back in college. Even with hands free communication, you're delayed reaction time is similar to having two alcoholic drinks. When you text, delayed action time increases to similar to 4 drinks.
It is our responsibility to be mindful of fellow drivers and pedestrians. If we don't submit out of love for others voluntarily, oversight steps in and we will be forced to, or penalized.

I think cell phone usage is addictive and it has simply gotten out of control. I have heard women in public bathrooms talking on their cell phones. I don't even want to think about this practice too much.

I say if a call can't wait, it is not worth having, unless it is an emergency. I am somewhat addicted to my phone and I hate it. I feel like I have to have it with me 24/7. I agree, how did we manage in the old days? We did somehow. Technology is great and all of that, but it does get in the way of our rational thinking. If it's dangerous, don't do it! We don't need anyone to tell us when we are behaving in a manner that could pose a danger to ourselves and others. We truly need to disconnect sometimes. 99% of the time I will not answer my phone when I'm driving. And, I absolutely will not text. I'm not even that good of a typist to be texting while driving Emoticon

Finally, we don't need laws to tell us how to be safe. I know I don't. But, for those of us who do need rules on the proper use of texting, talking, and driving, you should listen. For the most part laws are there to protect us from ourselves.

I do the same thing. I definitely need to be better about not using it at all.
