For years, we spent this weekend at our cottage 'up north'. We'd sit out on the deck with the Indy blaring on the radio while Dad bbq'd dinner. Then, we'd turn off the last two laps and drive back home in radio silence, so he could watch the end of the race in person on tv.
No, Dad wasn't into car racing at all!...
@CPres : "Give me a landmark and tell me left or right." I'm more than happy, but first I need to know which direction you're headed. Trust me, I used to field directions questions to a store I worked at. "You have to go east" "Is that a l or a r?" "Depends what direction you're going, do you know where downtown is?" 'No".
I mean, they lived in Houston, and downtown isn't a good enough landmark?...
@susieq : Well, coastal towns do it all the time. I can't imagine having a million dollar home on Galveston, the insurance is probably higher than the mortgage. If it's not, it should be....
@susieq : Wow, I hadn't heard that. At least Yelp and Google leave the bad reviews up, even if if they're obviously faked. I won't recommend it further....
I know this is resurrecting an old thread, but my fav speakeasy (Detroit Speak: blind pig) besides the one I did frequent in Detroit, was the Balinese Room on the pier in Galveston. It was already old when the Rat Pack went there, and was lost during Ike. It was next door to Murdoch's trinket palace (another place I hold dear), but was an amazing space. The cops would attempt a raid, and even if the owner's weren't notified in advance, the pier was so long that by the time the officers got to the back wi...
@Stealth83 : I love that cemetery! It's like a beautiful park set with history. Gene Tierney is there, and Clark Gable's step daughter (that's a whole 'nother, scandalous story). I took a docent led tour thru there a few years back, if they still do it, you get a lot more history that way.
"Also buried here are more than 300 veterans of nine wars, from the Black Hawk War of 1832 to Vietnam, including more than 135 Confederate and Union veterans."
Edited to correct my mistakes....
I'm on a FaceBook page of cast iron collectors. They find it all my scouring garage sales, flea markets, old barns, etc. They're full of restoration methods like lye baths, best seasoning methods, etc. It's fun to read about, while I cook my bacon in my one little Lodge pan from WallyWorld....
That's been me a few times, but more of an all over, not so delineated. Now I'm fully loaded, face stuff, body stuff, different strengths, lol. And I do not, ever, drink alcohol in the sun!...
@susieq : Yup, as I grew up my bday was in Nov. The year I turned 18 the drinking age was raised to 19. The year I turned 19 it was raised to 21.
I've never raised a teenager, but what I've seen, most things should be delayed, and assault weapons are certainly one of them. How many 16 year olds are still married, in a good relationship, 10 years later? Yes, I'm sure there are a few, but I've seen the divorce rates here in a no-fault state. All you have left is children in broken homes....
